Well, I expected it to be a western colloquialism, since the other places I deal with other truckers in normal conversation are BC, Montana, and Saskatchewan. But, judging by the response, outside of Kanasas, those are the ONLY places "Box" is used.. quite surprising to me.
I suspect it is regionalized to areas where there are grain farmers.... a "grain box" and a "grain bed" are quite different things.
And we even have a BC'er saying he uses "bed".
I would call those enclosed things a "Cube van"
Funny I just can't make the words "Longbed" or "Shortbed" come off the tongue without feeling odd... like calling your trunk a "boot" or your hood a "bonnet" or something!
But, hey can't argue with the numbers

I call it a bed for a pickup truck...box for a box van or box truck, or cube van. Those trucks actually have a big ol box on the back so it makes sense I guess.
I've always called it a bed, or "back of the truck" of course if you have an extended cab, it's the bed, cuz back could mean backseat. Only time i call it a box, is when it actually is a box. Box to me means enclosed shape, like a box truck, or boxcar......Man the word box is one of those words that looks really weird after you read it a bunch of times
I know for a fact I have never called it a box, unless I'm explaining what a bed is to some nit-wit who's never seen a pick-up before . About 99.9% of the time I call it a bed, but I have caught myself calling it a trunk once or twice, but it was an accident. My back seat is the trunk of my car, and my bed is the trash can.
Spray in "bed" liner really sounds funny when you hear it the first time, like I just did. Sounds like something you'd use to keep a waterbed from ruining your carpet LOL
But I realize now how much in the minority I am... I know the words 1/2 ton instead of pickup are fairly local..
Guess I would be speaking in a regional dialect if I said I was gonna take the Merc 1/2ton down and get a box liner and a capper put on 'er then, eh?
