Lost All Boost Pressure
Lost All Boost Pressure
Have a 2002 F-250 4X4. Driving home from work today and lost my boost, I think. Have guage hooked up.After leaving a stop sign, I accelerated heavy and hard onto the highway. Boost pressure was up to about 12-15 lbs . Heard a hard single thunk and boost immediately dropped to zero.Lost a lot of power but easily drove the rest of the way home. Unhooked the air intake when I got home to see if I could see the turbo fins. I could see the turbo spin when I cranked the engine on but after hooking the air intake back up and test driving it,Still no boost and no power. Is my turbo "blown" or is there something else the matter? PLEASE HELP. We were supposed to be leaving in the morning, towing an R V to the river. Will probable be going to the dealership.
my first thought (primitive knowledge), would be maybe your Exhaust Backpreassure Valve shut. i don't know if your familier with it or not. its a valve on the exhaust side of the turbo that closes partialy on cold days to help heat the engine faster. if you start the truck and listen to the exhaust pipe, is there a loud woosh or swishing sound? that might have shut somehow with your sudden power surge. give it a listen
For Red Stroker
Red Stroker , Went outside and started the truck. I guess it is a swoosing sound. Also seems like not much air flow coming out of the exaust pipe like there usually is. Please tell me more about this exaust gate. Is it something I can unstick? What would have made it close if it's the problem. It was 94 degrees when I was driving home.
well, if it is a swooshing sound ulike what the exhaust should sound like, then it probably is the EBPV. knowing tha tyou ahd the 4'' exhaust installed yesterday might have been the kicker. did you do the install yourself or someone else did it? if you did it yourself, go to the exhaust side of the turbo, and loosen the V-clamop around the Downpipe and turbo, pull the DP away from the turbo and you sill the the Valve. if it is more or less open (you'll be able to tell, its a butterfly valve), then your problem is somewhere else. if it is shut, in other words, the outlet of the turbo is essentailly blocked, then you need to open it manually. i don't know how you can get it to stay open, as i haven't had mine do that (they shouldn't be doing this). hopefully someone else will hop on this thread and let you know. let me know what happens
you blew one of the rubber intercooler boots off. check all 4 boots and clamps on the intercooler tubes (the sliver 3" dia. tubes on either side of the engine). it could also be one of the boots on the intake manifold (under the turbo) but most of the time its one on the intercooler tubes.
ah hah....someone who knows the NBS better than i. i forgot about those....since i don't have an intercooler
that makes sense though as well

CCV mod and cleaning out the intercooler pipes - and maybe the intercooler, too.
Also, if you need to clean out the intercooler, best way is to take it to a radiator shop, and have them boil it out. Then have them pressure test it and fix all the pressure leaks - there probably will be a few small ones. I've been told there usually are.

This is to thank Wlihntr. If you were here I would shake your hand. It was the intercooler tube on the passenger side that blew undone. The boot down low and in front. Apparently the guy at the diesal performance shop forgot to tighten that boot back up. He had removed that intercooler tube for easier access when installing my 4" down pipe. Anyways, reconnected it. Everything back to normal. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH. You too Red Stroker
This happened to me one time on my '95 (I have a SD I/C) while towing...pushing about 22 PSI of boost...and boy, did she slow down in a hurry!
Had to pull off, let her cool down some, and get my wrenches out (lucky I carry tools with me on trips) and I clamped it down tight! Wasn't a week later and one blew off (same hill...but other side of mountain) on the way home...and the intercooler tube on the hot side (first one was on the cold side) so I was back under the hood again!
I've since made up my own CCV mod, and have never had a hose come off, so it may be something you might want to do!
