I have a major leak around the sector shaft on my steering gear. Could I replace the seals in the gear or would I have to buy a whole new gear box? Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thank you
I haven't personally replaced my steering box, but the guy at the shop I go to told me that once Ford steering boxes start to go, to replace 'em. Also, they contain a lot of plastic parts that "should be made of metal". He suggested an aftermarket one built up to handle oversized tires.. they are built better than stock, and aren't too much more.
Mine has started leaking also on my '88 F150 with 140,000 miles. Wrapped one of my kids cloth diapers that they never used, around the bottom, secured it with some plastic electrical ties and am going to worry about it later. Not looking forward to changing that out.
I had the same problem with my 90 4x4. The problem is that the shaft begins to pit where it meets the seal so changing the seal will not fix the problem. My fix was to remove the steering box and remove the sector shaft. A local welder ground out the pits, spray welded it, and turned it down for about $50. I then installed an after market seal kit. Its been a year and has never leaked a drop
Had my seal go on my '87 4 X 4 and friend had his go on his '85 diesel 4x4. he had his rebuilt by Ford. $285 to pull it, rebuild it and reinstall. Ford parts man said they are only good for 140,000 miles. Seal is only about $20 but to put it in, have to disassemble whole gear and install it. I got one off an pulled one off my '82 4x4 for my '87 and it was a direct swap. Way cheaper than a rebuild.
