I bought an 88 Fullsize Bronco in December last year. The previous owner had painted over the rust and had a plate riveted on the roof. Thanks to some rain I found several rusted holes in my roof. I have never done body work and I would like to fix this the best way possible while living on a budget. Any help is apreciated. Once I'm home I can post pics.
You may not like this... but the "right" way to fix this is to get another roof, cut out yours, and use the new roof as a patch panel.
A secondary option is to drill out the rivets and remove the steel that was added, then tack weld in another plate that's shiney and new. Then dribble a product called "ospho" around the edges of the rusty areas of the factory roof, then let dry, then skim the depression in the rust holes with plastic body filler, then prime and paint.
If I was in love with the vehicle, I'd do the first method as it's going to last a much longer time.
ANother option depending on geography, is maybe you can find a fairly inexpensive junkyard bronco cab... and swap it over. Without the doors, the interior, etc, basically stripped down to the shell, four strong guys can lift a bronco body off the frame. I was one of those four guys a few years ago.
Thanks for the info. I stated removing the stranged paint job that was put on the roof to find most of the roof is shot. The interior panel appears to be salvageable, but I'm considering a bondo roof to get me by while I save some money.
Fair enough, just make sure there is something supporting the bondo... even if you have to use an epoxy to glue steel to the underside if you cannot weld.
