PLease help.

I recently had to take my 1992 Ford explorer 4x4 into a Dealer for a factory recall on the brake booster. since i got the truck back I have lost almost all the stopping power. I swear i had better brakes when the master cylinder was hanging on by one bolt and sitting sideways.

I took it back to the dealer and was told that all they do is unbolt the booster and swing the master cylinder out of the way. i was also informed that they dont bleed the brakes OR presurize the booster. This is my family car and I am scared to have my wife & son anywhere near it.

Am i crazy in thinking that they need to be bled when you change the booster?
This is my first Ford and I need a little help.

This is CRAZY, look in your owners manual, the phone number for the Ford zone rep should be in there.
Give him a call.

Sounds like a problem with the booster.

Theres no way I would have driven this off the dealers lot until the brakes were working properly. Why did you????

I didnt, my wife picked it up. she then called me at work and explained the problem to me. According to the service manager, it is not their problem. I will be fixing the truck myself this weekend.

IE.. Bleeding the brakes, Changing all the pads, keying the service mangers car, rotating my tires...all in all a busy weekend.

And I am kidding about the....tires, yeah thats it. HAHAHAHAHA

According to the Haynes manuals for my 87 Ranger & 95 Taurus the master cylinder is -as the dealer is telling you- simply unbolted & shoved out of the way. So theres no way for air to get into the system.

Sounds like the new booster might be defective & that IS the dealers problem.

Does the pedal go to the floor, or is hard to push down? Usually you don't disconnect the brake line to remove the booster, you just move it out of the way. If the pedal is hard to push down that would indicate a lack of power assist, which is the function of the booster. This could be a bad booster or lack of vacuum to the booster. Does the car run fine and idle smooth? Rough idle couls indicate a vacuum leak. Take it back to the dealer, or call the Ford rep. Good luck with this one.

It may be as simple as adjusting the brake pedal free play. I just did this on my other car, non-ford, because of the same problem..... you have to push way down on the brake before it starts to do anything. Once I adjusted the actuator bolt that connects to the back side of the booster, things were much better. I haven't looked at my Explorer, but I would assume that it would have something similar. Give it a check and let us know.
