if i replaced the turn signal switch and reconnected the wires coming out of the column would that solve the light problem?

Don't know for sure.

The problems you talk of there is no black & white solution.

Let us know what the wiring to the column looks like.

well the only wiring in the column is hanging out of the column about 2 inches. they are hookied up in the column but the previous owner cut the wires, so they are not hooked to anything. so i guess its worth a shot to find the other end of those wires under the dash and rehook em together and replace the t/s switch. i think thats where im gonna start because i dont really have 400.00 to spare. keep the info comin. thanks

If it's not cut, the end under the dash looks almost like a half circle with the female connections. Again, that's assuming that both ends aren't cut.

Write down all of the colours on both sides of the column connector.

I have an idea the guy has swapped in something that shouldn't be there.

I'll post some pics when I find them.

Please note*

These are of the 78 trucks

Check that blue/red stripe.
That wire goes to the transmission selector light
The wire is well known to break off & touch the metal column, short out & blow a fuse.

Remember my notice:

These pics are of a 78 hookup.

However,they should be close.

Did you check that blue/red white up inside the column for it being broken ?

another question

i was tracing the harness to the tail lights and coming through the rear cross member is a plug the wires going in are yellow/black,light green,brown,black/red
but the wires going out are light green, yellow and black, and 2 brown/blacks and one that i think might be a ground but that one is cut. any ideas? also on the framerail about in the middle of the truck there is a blue wire that has a end on it that kinda looks like a spark plug wire end but its not hooked up to anything, does anyone know what that is and where its supposed to be plugged in?

Sounds like a harness has been exchanged.

solid brown is marker/running lights

also on the frame rail about in the middle of the truck there is a blue wire that has a end on it that kinda looks like a spark plug wire end but its not hooked up to anything, does anyone know what that is and where its supposed to be plugged in?

probably related to fuel tanks,
do you have a single tank ?
