my son has a 88 ranger with 4 cylender he was driving home he said his truck starting making a noise in the motor and was loosing power and then died, he pulled over to the side and tried to start it and it sounded like the motor locked up the starter wouldnt turn the motor. he has always checked the oil and did the right stuff to take care off the p/u. can you help in what might be wrong thanks
Thats a real hard question to answer online but the first thing I would try is pulling the plugs and seeing if the engine will turn with the starter, make sure the battery is charged. Also take a look at the oil and coolant for anything unusual.
I think the 2.3 4 banger is a non-interference engine, can someone confirm this.
i just checked the fluid levels and the oil is a little low about a half a quart or so but not frothy or gray just black like it would be before a change with no strange smells outside of oil smell and the coolent looks like new like it should.i will check on trying to pull the plugs and turn the motor tomarrow if its not raining
same thing happened to me a couple years ago with an International cab-over semi tractor. lost power, tractor shook, pulled over, saw smoke, and looked under tractor...one of the pistons came out the side of the block, and another came out the oil pan. A loss of oil pressure can do a lot of damage quickly.
That said, engine failure has to be a concern in your case... If you have a manual transmission you can put the vehicle in 5th (or 4th) gear and try to get the motor to turn over. with an auto tranny, you may need to get to the flywheel to try to manually turn that. If you can't get your engine to turn over it's probably shot. If it turns over normally, you may just have less major problems, timing belt and/or starter, etc.
If theres any good news here, it would be that you should be able to do an engine swap pretty easily if you have some time, tools and a repair manual.

you are correct in that it is a non interference engine but if the timing belt broke or slipped it won't start, and if broke have seen them wad up on the crank pulley, and freeze the engine up (or atleast make it so that the starter can't turn it over)
Pulling the plugs and checking all the major fluids is a good start. Don't leave out fuel pressure too. What concerns me is that you said the motor won't turn over. Do you mean "it won't fire", or it won't even "crank the starter motor". The only "locked" motor I ever delt with acted like it wanted to start but since the crank wouldn't turn the starter sounded REAL bad. Anyway, it is easy to pull the starter and have it tested at a local parts place for free.
If it is good and the engine turns with no fire then I can tell you I had a heck of a time with my 88' when the coil wire harness broke. Nothing would get it to fire but all the other stuff would come on. So you may want to check for a bad coil or frayed connections.
While you are at it, pull the ECU codes and then reset it just for good measure.
when he was driving it he said it started to make noise like tic tic loud then started to loose power then the noise lessend then ti tic tic and lost more power then died and when he tried to start it and when we got the ranger home i tried to start it and it sounded like the starter was ingaging up to the fly wheel and wouldnt turn the motor over.
