LIving here in New England is goes with the territory. The panels work well and are the only way to go. I'll will be posting a pic soon and show you results of how they look if done correctly. (Having a pro do it) Body fillers tend to be porous and over time the rust returns.

it says 'estimated shipping costs'. what did they actually charge you for it? I have just enought left in my checking account if they're right.

The total bill was $80 even according to my checking account statement, for two patch panels and shipping. They came in one box with a piece of cardboard slipped between.
I have surface rust on my wheel wells, I think I can sand it down to bare metal and repaint with body filler (wouldn't need much).
Under the supercab of my F-150, on the drivers side, the very edge/lip has rotted. It was noticeable when I bought the truck 2 years ago, i've done my best to slow the rotting but it's time to cut that out and install a patch panel.
My F-150 has a couple minor rust spots that are going to be fixed this summer, and I'm going to remove the bed and sandblast/paint the frame/suspension.
The F-250 has two nice rot spots behind the corners of the cab, some rust on the front lower edge of the passanger side door, surface rust on a wheel well because the paint chipped off...etc...
The other day I found a paint blister, and I pushed on it with my finger and water burst out haha.
The F-150 had a rusty undercarage when I bought it, it has spent it's whole life in the New England area (NH). I spend lots of time on salty/snowy roads with it...I feel it has done very well in that regard. As long as you keep it under control, that's the most important thing. Don't let rust get out of hand.
I had the typical rust on my 93. I took those plastic guards off the inner wheel wells. They may keep alot of crap off the underneath but you can get in to wash out the stuff in the wheel wells. There is a piece of metal at the top of the wheel well that is open on either side. Dirt gets in there and stays. That's when it starts to rust. Since I took the guards out, I can pressure wash it and the right side has stayed solid.
Mustang - if the wheel lips are rotted, more than likely you have serious rust just above them, in the sealed area. It's sealed by a support piece, if you look underneath you'll see it. Unfortunately, water, dirt, pine needles and other crap get into the middle stake pocket, and land in this area, and remains a sopping mess until it rusts through.
I too had "surface rust" until i just tapped the area with my angle grinder with a sanding disk, trying to remove just the paint and primer. Chunks of the wheel well lip flew off.
Hopefully that's not the case for you, but it's very likely. It's the most common rust spot on pre-97 F-series.
I've consulted some local body guys and they say the patch panels will cause rust wherever they are welded back to the bed side, and then your back in the same situation after a couple of years.
The overall solution is to replace the bed sides and the support panels if you want it fixed right for the long haul.
Another option that was pointed out to me was to purchase some of those bushwacker or xenon fender flares that can be painted. They have several options as far as how aggressive they get sticking out. Me personally, I've been eyeing the ones from xenon that are close looking to the ones that they started putting on the 97's (they don't stick out as far) and newer. They are two inches tall and are molded to match the body lines of the older ford pickups. I was gonna post a thread asking if anyone had these on the mid ninety's body and if they had a pic to see what they look like.
Mine has one side repaired, with a panel, the other was bondoed, and painted by a body shop>? dono it was before i bought it, but i need to do the bondoed side over, along with behind the wheel on the botom thats rusted out too.
