I have a 94 4x4 ext cab long bed with the factory towing pkg. I bought the truck used 1.5 yrs ago and have not had any problems. The powersteering pump has always made a noise that sounds like a hydraulic cylinder actuating when I turn the wheels.I have no leaks and the fluid level is good.I haven't had any problems with the pump at all but was just curious about the noise. There is not any noise when the wheels are not being turned. I read an article once about there being a possibility of having a heavy duty pump that is just louder. Is this the case and how could I verify the pump model. Thanks in advance
There was an earlier post stating that you could reduce the noise by raising your front end off the ground and with your engine not running, remove the p/s reservoir lid and crank the wheels back and forth.
Does anyone recall this? I have the same problem but have not had time to try this method.
Raising the wheels off the ground and removing the lid (keep motor off) and moving your steering wheel side to side (12-15 times) will eliminate air from your lines which can cause noise. But, from what I read, the Ford truck pumps tend to be noisy. You may also get an increase in noise as your fluid heats up and installing a PS cooler can help with that.
I have one just like yours, same noise too. They are all like that. Nothing works I've tried it all. Ford pumps are just noisy. I was once contemplating replacing it with an older style GM pump that I know is quiet.
I put the GM pump with remote resevoir on mine and it seems to be quieter. Works great; but I also put on a GM 100 amp altenator, and the whining sounds like a turbo. Once the engine is above 1000 rpm the whining drives me crazy. At least I can drown it out with the stereo!!
