This has been an ongoing problem with my 94' EB and has finally reached the point where for all practical purposes, the door is too difficult to open/close. The door is sagging downward on the side opposite the hinges.
OK-I know I can make adjustments for lateral movement on the bolts that connect the hinge to the door but I'm assumming I need to loosen the bolts where the hinge meets the body to get any vertical adjustment. If this is the case, what's the easiest way to reach those bolts to loosen them? I took the door/hinge bolts out to partially remove the door but the body/hinge bolts are still very difficult to reach. I'm currently living in an apartment and tools are limited at this time.
For the record, is this even the most probable solution to my problem; that being the hinge/body attachment needs to be adjusted vertically?
Open the door and while it is almost closed (a few inches away from the door jam), lift up on it. Does it move, is there play? If there is you need the brass bushings replaced.
I have done this without taking the fender off with someone to help me hold the door as I unbolted the four bolts holding the hinge to the door. Then I cut and drove out the old pins and bushings and set new ones (available for cheap at Napa) and had someone hold the door while I bolted it back up and adjusted it.
The right way, of course, is to remove the fender so you can get to all of that easily. It's not really hard to remove the fender, one bolt accessible in front of the door, accessible with a long socket extension with the door open, one bolt at the very bottom of the panel behind the wheel, and various fasteners at the front.
If you dont have somebody to hold the door get some rope, park under a good tree, and tie the door to a tree limb with the window down. then the door hangs freely and you can do your thing easy.
