I recently visited the Auto Color Library site and they apparently got their hands on some chips for Ford trucks before 1959. They don't have all the years, but they do have enough that they cover a lot of the paint codes (M-numbers) for the years they don't have. For example, Earl's paint code for 1956 was U and the corresponding M-code was M-14283, Meadow Green. They don't happen to have the 1956 color chips, but they do show M-14283 Meadow Green for the 1949 model year. Since the M-codes are the same, that's the same Meadow Green as the 1956 model year. I FINALLY have a definite match for the original color and, best of all, they also have the PPG paint code for M-14283, DQE-40481.
One other note - I owe Abe a big apology. Abe, you went to the trouble to send me the paint chip for Meadow Green and I saw the 40481 code and assumed it was an M-code, not a PPG DQE paint code. Thanks for all the time and effort and help. You were absolutely correct, that chip is indeed the notorious Meadow Green M-14283 that Ford used for almost a decade on these old trucks.
My 55 panel was originally Meadow Green. It is a nice pleasant shade of green, just as seen on the Dennis Carpenter pickup.
Must have been popular with the customers, since it ran at least from 48 to 56. I wonder how long it did run on the Fords?
evidently my 56 panel was also the notorious meadow green, seems like you could get any Ford car in any color as long as it was black, and get any truck as long as it was meadow green.
Hey Gman let see some pix of the panel, I'd like to compare notes and maybe get together with them sometime. Mine is now a crappy paintjob red, but will be purple and silver sometime in the reasonable future.
Tom Brownell has some color information in the appendix of his book "How to Restore Your Ford Pickup." He shows Meadow Green available from 1949 to 1959 except in 1953. In 1953 there was Seafoam Green but no Meadow Green.
My 48 appears to have been a color somewhat like Meadow green but maybe a little more blue judging from what looks like the origonal paint on the firewall and interior. I think this may be the color Tom lists as Arabian Green. I've been trying to find a chip or some more information on that color but with no luck so far. Its not all that important to me though, my plan is to mix green tractor paint with blue tractor paint until its close to the interior color and call it Arabian Green.
AX, my panel isn't Meadow Green now; it's I believe Honda Electron Blue, circa about 2000. This is a purple/blue medium dark color. Looks good on the panel.
From the 1948 Ford Truck Handbook (The book for salesman)
Arabian Green M-14283 (Really Dark Green)
Vermilion M-1722 (Bright Red)
Crome Yellow M-14301 (Highway line yellow)
Birch Gray M-14286 (Light Gray)
Black M-1724 (Black)
Whether this adds anyting to the post or not, It's my contribution.

To your (and our ) amazement Dick, your post actually does add something. I've been mentioning that Ford used the same color names for different colors, and you've shown information that they used different names for the same color - namely 1948 Arabian Green and other years Meadow Green, both of which are paint code M-14283.
Auto Color Library currently has only the commercial (not truck) colors for 1948, but they have Vermilion M-1722, Chrome Yellow M-14301, Meadow Green M-14283, and Birch Gray M-14286 truck colors for the 1949 model year. Since the M-numbers (the Ford part numbers) are the same in 1948 and 1949, the colors are exactly the same. ACL can now supply you with any of these colors matched to the original Ford colors.

My 55 is kinda three tone grease dirt and rust color right now. Come to think of it so am I every time I get close to it. Sure am looking forward to the day when I start looking for color codes.

George, No apology needed, but thanks for your nice words. For inspiration for your metal work look at my before pics in my gallery, no closeups but you can see plenty of rust. Of course I didn't do the body work myself, but it was fun buying the repro cab corners, front and rear, and going to junk yards to buy useable parts. It should be easier now as they started making an inside rear cab corner just after my truck was finished.
Thanks for the information on Auot Color Library. I was wonmdering what the color was on my F1 and there it is under Ford Commercial Colors- Sea Island Green. Your other post this evening under a separate thread would lead me to believe tha this would have been some sort of special order. Is this correct?
I'm not aware of the truck having ever been a commercial vehicel but it does have (or did have) most of the avaiable options - Spotlight, Radio, Second Windshield Wiper.

Thanks guys. I could have spent years looking for an Arabian Green chip and never found one.
