.....'99 7.3 L leaks a red fluid(transmission fluid?) but only when in reverse. It is leaving marks all over my street when I back my trailer in.
Should I worry and what do I need to do to fix this?
Well Trakk you've got two places to look for the leak.
1. Take a look under the truck; around the steering box. ATF is used there. You may find your leak concerns the power steering pump and it's related components.
2. Look on the bottom side of the bell housing of the transmission. If it's leaking from there, then you probably will need to replace the front seal on the transmission. This will require removing the transmission.
I hope this helps.

Reason: correction
Power steering fluid reservoir is full and transmission fluid is low, so would you say it's probably that front seal and not the power steering pump? I wonder why it would only leak when the truck is reversing.
I had a friend tell me this morning that he drove his 1996 7.3 f-350 dully on a 350 mile trip pulling his 13k pound 5th wheel camper.. Once arrived started backing in site noticed fliud on ground stopped & found that it was transmission fluid (his). Called the local ford shop the service manager said he was loaded up on work.. He informed him to just wait until it cooled down bring fluid level to normal drive & see what happens. Made the return trip no issues.. Has anyone had this happen? What maybe the cause? Thanks..

You havn't got there yet.... Now we need to know where it's leaking. You've ruled out the power steering pretty much.
1. The plumbing for your transmission runs from the radiator area (where the cooler is),all the way back to the transmission. Check for signs of ATF along those two lines, and their connections.
2. Verify that you are seeing ATF at the bottom of the bell housing. This will point to the front seal that I mentioned earlier. There will be a drop or two there if it's been leaking at the front seal. You will probably see a small puddle directly below this area if it is leaking.
3. Look for ATF along the edges of the pan where it bolts to the bottom of the transmission. The mounting bolts may be lose from a filter change, or the gasket may be broken and leaking.
Just had one of the Trans cooler lines go out on my truck. 86K miles. - As stated above, you'll need to determine where the leak is coming from. The cause could be as simple as defective hose.
I'll find out from the mechanic later today. He has to know the answer to that. He's a Ford diesel guru people bring their super duties to from 3 states.
The reason your T/C seal is puking fluid in reverse is because the T/C does not lockup in reverse, it just keeps slipping and super heats the trans. Theres three things about these transmissions everyone needs to know.
1. dont tow in overdrive
2. when your backing up a trailer put it in 4 LO so the converter is locked. you wont have any problems after that.
3. Install an additional trans cooler and your trans will last a lot longer.
I would probably smell your trans fluid and see if it smells burnt. If so it might be time to rebuild it with a heavy duty T/C and shift kit. I hope this helps.
voodoo
Well, no, matter of fact, my transmission doesn't have a 4wd-low. Gee, I musta' been cheated by the factory on this. All I got was four forward gears and a reverse.
The state of my transfer case does not affect my TC's clutches. Again, I musta' got cheated. It's all Ford's fault that I don't have these features and will have to prematurely rebuild with OEM parts instead of heavy-duty.
