My 2000 7.3 (140K) is still burning minute amounts of oil. I smelt it earlier today. After looking under the hood, I noticed that there is a puddle of oil in the valley of the engine block. What's the problem? How much to fix it? Is the oil in the engine block valley related to the burning oil? HELP!
very well could be the "burning oil" it is the amount you are losing, and could be the smell as the block heats up. Check out the HPOP for leaks, and the turbo pedistal too. Hope this helps
Sorry but I forgot to mention I could see the black smoke as well. I'm no mechanic, so I don't know where all these parts are. Would either of these possibilities be expensive to fix?
Black smoke is a good thing (as long as it is not excessive), blue or white is bad. The HPOP I cannot really say as I have not had to do it. The turbo orings are not a real hard job but time consuming and you will need the right tools. Heatstroked has written a nice step by step, sheet on removal and install of the turbo and how to, tools etc. BTW, this would be a good time to do the wicked wheel install, hx crossover and CCV bypass to as everything will be out and exposed.
The smoke was not excessive, but I could smell oil in it for sure. I just got the truck two months ago, so I really have no clue how to fix it. I'll have to bring it to the stealership or a private mechanic I know who works on diesels. Any idea what it'd cost to have done? I appreciate all the help guys.
I could (hopefully) be mistaken. I forgot that the black smoke was normal. Maybe it was just slightly-raw diesel fuel that I smelled. The truck uses no oil at all. I've been monitoring the oil level and it has been normal since I changed it nearly a month ago. I even smell the exhaust, and it smells as it should. The tail pipe just has the normal soot you'd expect from a diesel. And perhaps the small pool of oil in the engine block valley was from a previous fix. It is dirty oil, and when I checked the oil recently, it certainly wasn't black like the oil in the engine block valley. I took a paper towel and absorbed it. I'm going to check it after I drive it some more. And to top things off, the truck runs mint, except for the occasional slight ringing noise, maybe from a loose bracket or clip connected to the turbo or something.
