The problem is that its alot of baby boomers retireing because they made there millions in California and now there moving into the northwest to retire. Most of them don't care if the jobs are prevalent as they don't really need them. The thing I really hate is that they tend to bring their political baggage with them and make everbody else follow along. Its a philosophy of "My god, what are these people thinking we need to change policy (laws) around here to mirror what California has"
If you sense a bit of animosty towards Californians from those who live in the northwest you are absolutely correct.

People in my neck of the woods would be much happier if California and a few other select places around the country quit moving here. Our lifestyle and way of life is (was) just fine as is; outsiders comming around and trying to change it results in tensions. And yes, a good hard winter sends lots of them packing for warmer places. One of the most unsightly things on the roads here are Cal plates, however some of the locals show them that they are #1 with their right hand. Not a rant here but rather the reality of the situation.

People tend to forget that some of these so-called-native-Californians were once from some other parts of the country i.e. mid-west, east coast, etc., and brought their political baggage and philosophy here to California. It just didn't start here, but is passing through to your neck of the woods. And soon you'll be passing your political and philosophical baggage on to the next area. And so on and so on........I don't think the blame can be put on any one area. If you must put blame on someone....maybe blame your...............................
The problem is that you guys lump all us Californians in together. Up here in the northern part of the state we've been experiencing the same problems as you with the southern Californians. That's why so many of us advocate the splitting of the state, but it'll never happen. The majority of the population, and therefore the money and political clout, is in the south, but for some screwy reason the state capitol is in the north. I'd like to see the line drawn somewhere around Monterey, let those in the south keep all their stupid laws since they were virtually all made to apply to them and we just got stuck with the backlash, and we'll start over and make new laws drawing from our neighbor states to the north and west. And we'll keep our water too!
So please, neighbors, don't treat us all as though we're diseased just because we're from California, we've been So.-Californicated up here too! -TD
Yes indeed, Tiger Dan has said it best. I too am a native Californian, but after a lifetime in construction in Southern California, I and my wife who is also a native are ready to move on. Our youngest graduates from high school a year from now and at that point our hope is to leave SoCal to those that want to live here far more than I do. The traffic is out of control with no solution coming anytime soon. I have a good friend who lives in Humboldt County and she says she is just waiting for us to call and start the house hunting. I am hoping for some peace and serenity as I travel into this stage of my life.
Gonna be change in climate for you, that's for sure! Eureka's also got a great 3/8 mile paved oval track, called Redwood Acres. They get a lot of races fogged out though...I hope you like fog! -TD
Ive got a Hmong friend who was born and raised in California but she is currently living in Wisconsin.
She always used to tell me how she hated Wisconsin and wanted to move back to Cali when she got the chance.
However, I took her with me to northern Wisconsin snowmobiling this past winter and more recently I took her ATVing and she is coming around a bit. Im slowly but surly exposing her to life here in Wisconsin and I think shes actually starting to turn into somewhat of a country girl (how many Asian redneck chicks do you know?) a few weeks ago she told me that she only wanted to leave Wisconsin and go back to Cali because she was afraid to drive on the snow and ice. She has now gotten used to winter driving and now I guess shes going to stay and make a life for her here in Wisconsin.
Apparently good jobs and affordable housing are more important to her than warm weather.
Now if I only I could convince her to sell her Honda Civic and get a truck, Id be doing pretty good. I dont see it happening though, the only trucks she will even consider are those carlike SUVs. Might as well keep the Civic as far as Im concerned.

I have a cousin that is living in Wisconsin (Greenbay) for about 15 years, but she wants to move back home to Ca., but can't. I think maybe it could be that the price of housing has some what skyrocketed past Neptune and beyond.
I am not aiming my remarks at anyone in particular nor do I think that everyone in California is necesarily the problem. However, that being said, California is known from many outsiders as the cesspool of the nation. Your state has a very bad image to those of us who live in the northwest, midwest, southeast, and even some in the east. Some of the most liberal senators in the nation represent your state i.e. Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein. Your representatives are not much better with the likes of Nancy Pelosi as the democratic leader. Your state has alot of influence on the rest of the nation based on its large representation in congress. It sets political trends and leads the nation in liberal ideals. Its the experimental playground for social programs and liberal reforms. Maybe you can understand why the rest of the country has such a distaste for your state based solely on its political viewpoints and rediculous laws. And thats just for starters I won't mention the numerous economic problems and societal ills that befall your state. Until you guys get your state under control the view from the rest of us will not change.
Again, I am not condemning anyone in particular I am just stating the facts. Washington state has many of the same issues I mentioned above and we are working hard to counter them before it becomes another California.
And therin lies the problem...yet, people still keep flocking here in droves. That was Ben's original question; why? Sure, a large part of the influx is immigrants, but there are still a lot of people moving here from other states.
Get our state under control? Yeah, THAT'LL happen! As long as we keep electing people like the Di & Barbi Show, don't look far that to change anytime soon. Unfortunately, things just keep getting more and more out of hand and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight. As I said, 1 in 8 americans live in this state, and it keeps going up. That does give us huge political clout, but the powers that be keep clouting the wrong things with all that juice.
I don't have the answers, it just hurts to feel that I'm being blamed for all the state's ills just because I live here. I get "Oh, you're from California?!" accompanied by the distasteful curl of the lip makes me feel like some subhuman species. Guess what! I'm not personally to blame for what this state has become, just because I live here. Many of us here in the northern part of the state are not any happier with what this state has become than the rest of you. But it seems our voice is too small to be heard. Oh well, whatcha gonna do...? -TD
(Correction: in post #34 above I said "...our neighbor states north and west." I meant north and EAST! Sorry, it's not that I don't realize that the nearest state to the west of us is the state of extreme sogginess, it's just that I'm dyslexicic!)
(QUESTION TO MODERATORS: Is this thread getting too political for FTE guidelines?)

tigerdan/sierraben.
yup been there done that, In fact i was born in humbolt county.
Eureka, anyhow reading some of the post, been always an advocate of spliting california, and to bad it wouldnt happen. So now im in the northwest outside of seattle and been there some 30 yrs. I also dont understand why so cal or any at all would move
here to escape the crowds or political happenings, shoot really
washington isnt much better. spread the word around the country
IT RAINS TO MUCH HERE MOVE TO THE SOUTHEAST.
Yes, in my view, this post has started to lean to the political side of why people may or may not dislike California.
How about we get back to the original topic of "why people are moving to california"?
And please, guys and ladies, let's not bash our California FTE'ers in any way. There are good people in every state of our great nation. And...unfortunately... the dodo isn't extinct in ANY of them.
