I think its 185hp and 300-310 ft-lbs. Making the most torque around 3000-3500. Since the 351 has a decent length stroke it makes decent torque all around. I have one in my F-250 with 140k miles on it. I recently towed my enclosed snowmobile trailer (two sleds inside) at about 2500 lbs, another 750-800 lbs in the bed, 100 lbs of gear in the cab, loaded up pretty good, I could accelerate faster than my buddy's beater 87 wrangler with a 4.2L. We had 2-3 runs from the toll booth top about 75-80 mph. There was about a car length difference.
It had enough power to get the job done pretty well, I like the 351.
Those trailers are pretty bad on aerodynamics too, so they're more restrictive to pull but easier to slow down from a high speed.
The 302 makes roughly the same horsepower but less torque, around 260-270.
Around 94+ they increased the numbers in horsepower to about 205 for the 302 and 210 for the 351.
The 351 does just fine in my F-250. I think it's the optimal engine, the 460 is nice but with todays gas prices....it's not worth it to me. If I was haulin a really heavy load often I would, but I don't have anything massive.
The 351 is my engine of choice. You can always modify it pretty cheaply if it isn't enough power, but they're pretty nice motors. My dad's F-250 had a 351, no overdrive, and carried more weight then my F-250, his died at about 133k miles...mine's at 141k and other then the fact that I currently have a vacuum leak, it runs great.
I believe the 351w is rated at 200-210 hp from 88 on up, the 96 351w was rated at 235. Torque numbers quoted are right. The 351s are good pullers. Mine has no trouble handling ~2000 lbs in the back of the truck even with hills, although the 2.75 rear is really killer getting started from a dead stop. Oh, and my 351 has about 250k km (~155k miles) on it too.
Mustang, since you mentioned it...what kinda gas mileage do ya get? I hear many people say 17-18 is easily achieved in an EFI engine with a light right foot and overdrive?
