I just picked up my 7.3 yesterday, while drive home on the free way every time i would cost going down hill or something my engine would 'stop running' the rpms were up but there was no sound whatsoever, it does this every time im above 30mph or so, so im thinking its normal but damn its an eerie silence. Does anyone know why this happens?

Programming strategy. The ECU commands the injectors off when coasting. Saves fuel.
thats along the lines of what i was thinking of. man this truck rules!! i've gotta stop drooling over it long enough to take some pictures of it for you guys.
Its kindof a neat sound isn't it? Drive around in one of these noisy rattling beasts then let off the pedal, silence, just the wind. Pretty cool.

The same thing happen to my PSD the other day. I was hauling my boat to the lake and got behind some road construction. After coasting down a hill the truck cut off and now I know why. Thanks
That happened to me once with my old 96 PSD, I put it in neutral and it shut off. I actually had to restart it. Is that what your talking about?
No, what is being discussed here is the sound, or lack thereof, of the injectors being turned off by the computer when the engine is around 1300 rpm and above and your foot is off the throttle
Thats what I thought. That tormented me so bad that I never tried it again kinda scary going down the sisquyous and realize you dont have power stearing or brakes
Seems to me that this could cause your engine to die if, for some reason, the coast system in the tranny didn't work. True?
Coast system in the tranny? not sure what that is. But what is being discussed is a "fuel saver" mode for the engine, It can tell if it's pulling a load or coasting, and when it's coasting there is no need to be adding fuel so, as stated, no more, or minimal amounts of fuel are being added, so it's quiet. Once it starts pulling again you're back to normal... pouring the coals to it again as usual.

i think you might have a problem if it cuts out, and you dont have powersteering or power brakes.. My engine is still 'on' but its just not getting any fuel, therefore the powersteering and power brakes work perfectly while in this fuel efficency mode.. thinggy..
