checking/testing sensors
what should i do to prevent that?
also, exactly how do you test the ACT, ECT, O2, etc. sensors? and what about the air bypass valve and solenoid? how can i make sure these are working properly?
what else should i consider?
thanks
The shop you had the cats replaced at should have looked to see why they died in the first place . Cats always seem to go bad from over rich conditions . All the sensors you mentioned have various ways to be tested . Best thing to do is get a detailed repair manual , a volt ohm meter , a vacuum gauge and check each sensor the way it is described . The air and coolant temp sensors send back various signals to the ecu depending on the temps of the air and coolant ..they have a range . Ie: at 190 deg , the coolant sensor should display X Value . A good diagnostic manual will show usually in terms of a bar graph what the sensor should say . The O2 sensor generates its own signal whereby the others work from resistance values . Best thing to do with the Air Bypass Valve and throttle body is clean them periodically ...Once or twice a yr works for me . Good luck with it .

This book is the best money I've spent since buying my 89 Ford F250. It tells you about troubleshooting, how to test sensors, what diagnostic meters and tools to use, how to increase H.P., etc. I was able to diagnose my own truck problems and brought my 460 mileage back up from 8.5 MPG to 12.5 MPG. You can get the book from "Summit" (800)230-3030 or call the publisher (800)423-4595. Deen
