New owner here!
Did a search on the 4x4 system to see if I could do a conversion to manual hubs(nope!)
I have an '02 F-150 Super Crew and was wondering how reliable the 4x4 is.
I do alot of beach driving and dread the day they may crap out on me.Seen it happen alot on various makes of trucks.
I did the man. con. to Warns on my '91 Bronco after the autos failed, and the performance and reliability have been great.
Any info on how I can maintain top performance from this system?
I dont have any info on this swap, but so far my 97 4x4 has been good, no problems yet! Then again I never did have a prob on my 89 4x4 with manuals ever either...
It is generally a good idea to engage the 4x4 system at least once/month to keep the o-rings lubricated and the vacuum lines from deteriorating and such. If you do that I think it is a pretty reliable setup.
I had a bad experience with mine. The first snowfall of the season I put my plow on and my truck wouldn't go into 4 wheel drive. It took me 20 minutes to get it back into the driveway and get the front end up in the air. I moved the plunger in and out manually and sprayed it with liquid wrench. Once I got it engaged, it worked alright all winter, but make sure you check that it goes in before you get in a slippery situation.
I do the same thing as Brian. I have a 2000 4x4 offroad shift on the fly. 58k and no problems. I use my 4wheel drive a good bit every hunting season which last 3 months.
I've got 97 4x4 with 120k no probs. And I really put the 4x4 to use. Shift on the fly. I think the only complaint ive heard is about the system freezing, which is nothing special to ford. Shouldnt give you any trouble.
Thanks guys.
I've known about the frequent use factor, but never heard of the system freezing up!
I fish the beaches from Jersey to New Enlgand in temps down to the mid 20's!
TEEJAY,is the plunger easy to access?Only had the truck a short while and haven't had a chance to get to know it.
