Trick to removing echaust manifold studs?

Ok, I am in the middle of replacing the exhaust maifold studs on my truck. The one closest to the fender came out easy ( nut was rusted to stud and it backed the stud out). But the second one is giving me fits, it never had a nut on it, someone must have taken the pipe off before and half way put it back on, hence the exhaust leak and why I'm replacing them. I dropped the starter to get a better access to it. I has been sprayed wiyth WD-40 all day, I can get vise grips on it, but the stud is so soft they don't get a bite. Any tips? Thought of putting the starter back in and starting the truck to warm the manifold and see if I can grip it enough to turn it out. Any other ideas, Thx.

I recently replaced all the studs on my 95 E150 300. I had the luxury of working on my bench vise, because I removed the manifolds. Only one stud came out with just visegrips. A couple were removed after heating with standard propane torch, and the last wouldn't move until I heated the surrounding area to a soft red glow with oxyacetylene. And this is all considering I had a spare manifold. I broke one stud off in the first manifold and ended up ruining it when I took an angry cutting torch to it! I was lucky I had a backup!

Expect a fight!

They appear to be a special design tight thread. Very shallow thread grooves. Standard size US threaded stud will work. Ford gets 7 bucks a piece for each stud and 7 bucks a piece for matching brass nuts. In hindsight I should have shopped around more for aftermarket studs and nuts. I went to Ford after only checking one parts shop, which didn't have the large size I needed.

Good Luck!

Stud To Tough!

Might Try Double Or Triple Nuts, Tighten Against Each Other, Then Get On Two Of Them With Wrench, Still Using Penatrating Oil, If Breaks Off Drill Hole Use Easy Out.

I picked up a set of EFI exhaust manifolds and had to replace the studs. The only way I got the old studs out was to heat them red hot with my oxy/act tourch. Fred

Well it sounds like a torch is the best option. But I don't have one. I will try the jam nut technique and hope it works, because I've messed the threads up pretty bad with vise grips. My uncle does have a welder I can get ahold up pretty easily if I could weld a nut on the stud and back it out.
