Has anyone had any long term experience running synthetic automatic transmission fluid in the E40D? I have been running it in my 96 F-150 4x4 302/E40D since it's first tranny maintenance interval at 21,000 miles. The truck has 62,000 miles on it now and the tranny has operated fine. I tow a boat (3,500 lbs.)and usually have a pop up camper (1,300 lbs.)on the truck during the summer. I also added an auxillary tranny cooler even though my truck has the factory tow package and super engine cooling. I never tow in overdrive. I have talked to some RV'ers who pull fifth wheel trailers and run synthetics in their E40D's. They told me that they don't even change the fluid, but send a sample of it in occassionally to have it analyized for fluid breakdown and signs of tranny wear. I know heat is a trannys worst enemy and am wondering if using the synthetic is worth the addition cost in the long run.
Punkster ,
I have run the Mobil 1 Syn Tranny fluid in my M5OD ...159,000K miles and its fine . Knowing the troubles folks have had w the E4OD , Im sure it wont hurt it . I have used all Mobil 1 fluids in the engine and trans , transfer case , and both diffs from 5000k till now . Plus I use it in the tranny of my wifes Camry . I service the trans about every 2 yrs and the filter screen is hardly dirty . Id say if your towing , w all the cooling equipment you have installed , the Mobil 1 should be an added benefit .

I am currently running Red Line synthetic,as suggested by the builders of my last tranny rebuild and modification. I have also heard Mobil 1 is an excellent fluid. I use mobil 1 oil in my motor, with great results. The synthetics dont break down under the heavy heat generated by the considerably large E4OD torque converter. I would not tow in OD under "ANY" circumstance however,(except maybe, all down hill in both directions). A tranny fluid temp gauge is also a good investment if towing often. PS: Mobile 1 syn. gear oil is also very good for the often neglected and hard working diffs.
