wiring 240v circuit

i am installing a 240 out let in my garge to run a ir compressor so far i have installed the breaker run the wires now i need to know how to hook it up right in the outlet box i have 2 hot wires one neutral and a ground now do i conect both hot wires together to get the 240 volt but by connecting them i thought it might back feed the system with 240 or is that incorrect it is a 50 amp circuit.

Do not connect those 120V hot lines together; they are out of phase and the end result will be spectacular. The 120V lines travel as a sin wave: When one is high the other is low. The net result is 240V difference between the two lines. A 240 volt receptacle (20 or 30 amp, probably), will have places for each hot line and a neutral (round opening). The ground wire should be grounded to the box. This is not the only way to wire 240 and maybe someone else can explain it better. If in doubt bring all wires to box and have electrician make final connection. I had one done; it was simple, and cost about $80 and it was right.

For a 240 volt comp you will need two hot wires and a ground.

The receptacle will be marked. There are 240 volt receptacles that take a neutral. Like dryers and stoves. They have 120volts tapped for timers, clocks, etc. so they do need a neutral.

In your case, you do not need the neutral. Just the 2 hot legs and the ground.

If you are unsure...definitely call a Sparky. Or email me, I am an electrician.

well on the motor i am trying to hook in to the system it shows 3 wires on the diagram a ground,a black one labeled 240 and a neutral and it shows the same for 120 operation but instead of saying 240 it says 120 and mentions to remove a brown wire from the low voltage side and move it to the high voltage side for high voltage use.

ford390gashog,
It sounds like the brown wire is your second hot on the motor.

A 240V circuit is 2 120V hot circuits out of phase as described by rainbowatf

Take numbersix's advice, either contact an electrician or email him. When you see it done once properly you will have all the info to do it correctly next time.

Not worth the risk of hurting your compressor motor or yourself!

Ed

sounds like you trying to a dual voltage motor to run on 240. make sure all the differant wires in the motor go to the correct termnials for the voltage. there is probably a small picture of both voltages. In your situation, you will be using the two hots and the ground, attach one of the hots to the 240v terminal the other to the labeled neutral and ground the frame/grounding terminal. a neutral(wire to carry unbalaced load back to the panel) is not needed on a 240v motor. Usually the power wire goes to a pressure control first, then to the motor.
