I have a '86 F-150 with duel tanks, does the sending unit to gage for each tank go through the selector switch? the gage reads empty all time but the selector wont switch from the rear to the front tank either, if the switch or selector valve is out will that cause the gage to read empty all time????
I am not sure about an '86, but my 89 with dual tanks has a double pole/double throw switch to select between tanks. One side of the switch is for the fuel gauge wiring and the other side is for the electric pumps in the tank.

I've got a carbureted 87 with dual tanks; the fuel selector switch in my setup does two things: allows the sending unit to send signal to guage and it also supplies power to the solenoid. Supplying power to the solenoid occurs when the front tank is selected; the rear tank is the default position for the solenoid, so no power is applied with the fuel switch in that position.
This is definitely different if you've got EFI. I had one sending unit replaced recently and found that the wiring within the sending unit was backwards from the original. What this showed was the guage going well below "E" when it had gas in it. I switched the wires at the plug connector and now it works fine.
