Well, I made the mistake of falling asleep in the pool on one of those floaty things. I was out there for about 3 hours or so. I am very fair skinned and the U.V. index for yesterday was 10(Vegas). Well I got second degree burns from it and I look like a lobster . Now I have blisters forming everywhere, should I pop these things or let them be? I know it sounds kinda of but I'm in some serious pain right now. Also, is there some sorta stuff I can put on my skin? I have used Aloe Vera but it only seems to feel good for about a 1/2 hour until the pain hits agian. Thanks!
Quick search comes up with: vinegar, wet tea bags, egg whites, and aloe (straight off the plant) But you might want to get that looked at if it's 2nd degree burns.
See a dermatologist. Better save than sorry. Melanoma is no laughing matter.
I had a similar incident about 20 years ago. Was in Silver lake in the Sierras when I fell asleep in my Avon inflatable on a clear and 90 degree day. Reflection from the lake, 7200 feet elevation and the thin air; 4 hours later the skin on my back felt tight. The next morning, my white t-shirt was spotted blood red.
Just to reiterate what Sierraben said, GO SEE A DOCTOR. Even after getting out of the sun your skin will continue to burn under the surface. Severe damage can occur and in some cases may require skin grafts. And I'm sorry I yelled, but your health is important.
And, whatever you do, don't pop the blisters! (If you can help it, don't. Alot of times they will break when you move or when you wear a shirt, but leave them alone, they can get infected.) Lots of aloe- that cool blue gel stuff you can get at walmart. Vinegar, if you can stand the smell, it takes away the sting for a while. Drink lots of water to rehydrate yourself.
Oh, yeah, I almost forgot...
Welcome to Las Vegas. Hope you feel better very soon.
I'd add vinegar to a tub of the COLDEST water you can get yourself into, for as long as you can stand it... adding more cold water after you have aclimated yourself to what's already there. I've don'e some serious good for burns this way.
Also, if you have a friendly local drug store, ask them if they make Ketoprofen. It's a mix of Water, poloxamer, ketopropfen, lecithin, soya, Isopropyl palimate, alcohol and potassium Sorbate. They have to mix it themselves and it is expensive ($10.75 for a 1 oz bottle), but it is absolutely the BEST for small burns that are very painful. I have even had my wife apply it to my back ... after the cold tub thing... and the pain went away twice as fast as normally. I had a burn similar to yours last spring and it really helped.
For burns on your hand or body, like from picking up something hot or touching a hot manifold or something... apply the Ketoprofen liberally, stacking it on. The burn will hurt for a while, but by the next day, or within a few hours, the pain will be gone. 2nd degree burns can be bad, but not as bad as 3rd degree. I'd still have mom, wife or GF keep an eye on it for infection.
"Dr Dick"
I hear ya man, It just makes my skin hurt just thinking about it. I would say see a doctor, take some tylonol for the pain, and yea do not pop the blisters if all possible.
I hope you fully recover and all but next time if you are going to be swiming or floating on a float thing then wear some sun block,I am on the East coast and I use spf 50 that way I would not go into work sore, but use the highest number you can find.
Bottom line is stay out of the sun, if possible; or just don't go out to tan. A tanned skin is a damaged skin. I once saw this lady at Stinson Beach who must have lived for tanning. Her skin looked like chewed beef jerky leather. Nasty, horrible and........did I say nasty and horrible?
Try to find some spray called "Solarcaine" in a green can. My wife and I used that stuff in Hawaii on our burns. Must have gone through a can a day.
And my wife had the same burns you had. Her blisters were about the size of 3 quarters (coins) laid flat, in about 4 different spots on her upper back. Talk about pain.
I burned my shoulders and legs. And my head on the first day, because I forgot my stupid hat.
Anyway, it's probably too late to tell you this, but, no matter what the sunscreen bottle says, it isn't waterproof. Either get all the way in the water, or stay the heck out. Once you get out, don't towel dry, but "air dry". Once dry, reapply the sunscreen liberally. For every time you get in the water, you have to do this. And if you're like me, (bald) wear a hat in the water too.
I took some IB Profin or what ever it is called and that seemed to help the pain. I put on some of that cool blue stuff and it feels good for a while. The blisters got a little bigger but the burns themselves are going down. I think I will try some of the suggestions and ride it out. Thanks for the help!
Best stuff I've found is a lot like what bigrigfixer said.. the Solarcaine. Except I used the gel kind instead of spray. I had 2nd degree burns last summer when finishing concrete without a shirt on. But I put that on and I was able to go back to work, while beforehand I couldn't move at all. The Solarcaine is good stuff, and not very expensive.. it takes the pain away, and moistureizes the skin as well. Good luck to ya.
I have an old Army doctor and he is the best. I got severe frostbite (i looked like rocky after the big fight one eye completely shut and swollen)a couple of years ago while snowmobiling. The emerg. doctor just sent me home said there was nothing they could do and stay out of the cold.
My army Doc. gave me a precscip. cream called Flamazine. This is for severe burns, the cream eats the dead skin and reduces blisters and swelling. This will ensure there is no scaring.
I read the instruction and the cream can not be applied with metal instruments or it will eat through them!!!! and I'm putting this on my face.
I don't really give firm advise on this site but believe me when I say this is the best stuff for severe burns - trust me, and consult your doctor!
Hope your feeling better soon
Ice packs! Burnt the heck out of my arms one day roofing and was afraid I wouldn't be able to work the next day. So I started thinking about what you do for a burn, put Ice on it. Worked like a charm, the next day it looked like I had been tanning for a month but there was no red.
