Hey folks, just got the f250 cab and nose back together after a major rust repair job and new paint. I bought this truck in February cheap and only drove it a couple of times before tearing it down.
I pulled outta the driveway and went down the road, started climbing a big hill and noticed that blue smoke was coming out the tailpipe, bed is off, saw it real good. Wasn't so thick as to choke or blind anyone, but not a good sign from my experience. It also makes my eyes burn from diesel fumes if I stand next to it for any length of time, dumping raw fuel, maybe?
Truck is only supposed to have 150k on it, motor is pretty clean for an 83 6.9, although the return lines are still painted, looks like the IP is much newer, still gold colored and clean, has the red seal goop still on the adjustment screws and aren't cracke dor tampered with. I don't think the injectors have ever been replaced, will they cause blue smoke?
It starts right up, even in February when it was 0 degrees it would fire right up after the gp's cycled, cranks maybe 2 revolutions, always starts the same, even when in the garage at 65- 70 degrees. Never smokes at idle or lower rpm's, either.
I hate to think of replacing rings right now, seals would be nice and easy.
Any thoughts or experiences?
I agree sounds like a fuel problem, If the injectors look like the originals I would just get new ones, I see them all the time on e-bay for 20 bucks or less apiece by the time you pay to have them tested and put new o-rings and copper seal you'll be close to that price anyhow. Although they can last longer than 150k. If you have one that is leaking bad which can cause blue smoke, it can also wash the oil off of the cylinder bore causing cylinder problems down the road. Pump timing could also cause blue smoke, if you can loosen the three mounting nuts and move the pump just the thickness of the allignment mark at the top bolt, move it one way tighten it up drive it then move it the other way and drive it this usually makes a noticable difference, even though the marks line up for correct timing as the gears wear a little so does the timing change a little. good luck
You know something... I think that is normal for smoke to come out when you are climbing a grade though. It is putting a strain on the engine and if you are like me you give it more pedal to keep it from lugging right? I'd say that the smoke is normal.
I do, sucks that the tach doesn't work, so I don't know what my rpm's really are. Sounds like it is really turning, doesn't seem to govern. Going to fix the tach or get an aftermarket unit, hate not having it.
I'll drive her til she blows up and then rebuild the monster better than new.

Diesels in general tend to be oun the louder side and seem to crank higher thank it actually is. Mine at 3K sounds awesome. Try to keep it about 1500rpm tho. Note the word Try. Disconnect your exhaust. It'll sound better.
