Ok well as some of you know i have a FE 390 that i am rebuilding. I have got the motor taken down and block sent to the machine shop. I got a call back from the shop and he told me that he has searched the block and crank and could not find any casting number but it was a FoMoCo. hmmm ????? anyway he said that i could go .030 over pistions and .010 under on the crank. So this is the kit that i am going to get that Kurt had suggested.
The kit number is FEM-MKP601N-311 from SummitRacing
Can some of you give me your thoughts on these kits?
(oh yeah i am getting a new Crane 941 cam, RPM intake, and a 600 or 750 Holley carb, heads polished and ported)
Edit: I am also going to get them to change that standard volume oil pump to a high volume oil pump
Thanks

Just use the standard volume oil pump included in the kit. It'll work just fine. If you're getting new rockers and rocker shafts (you ARE, aren't you?) you wont have to worry about low oil pressure at idle.
Go to DSC and get their "FE Adjustable Rockers, Solid Spacers and Pushrods" kit for $320. It includes everything you need to convert to an adjustable valvetrain.
Well, the purpose is so you can accurately set lifter preload. I've read more than a few threads on here where "I put in *** cam and now I have bent pushrods." The reason was they retained the stock non-adjustable valvetrain, and one or more of the lifters had excessive preload. When they rev it up, the lifter pumps up and holds the valve open ever so slightly, the combustion pressure hammers the valve closed, and something's got to give. Usually the pushrod.
I'd hate to see that happen to you, that's why I'm recommending the adjustable valvetrain. By being able to set the preload accurately for each and every lifter, the above nasty scenario is no longer possible. Besides, you'd be replacing old worn out rockers, rocker shafts, and pushrods with good new ones that will hold oil pressure. And that's always good.
If you're asking about the valve-train, I suspect it's refurbished. But yoyu should check with DSC to confirm. I went with the erson setup, but they run about $650 (stands, rockers, shafts).
I think it's new components, but check with DSC like Greg said. Here's their description:
"This is everything you need for a reliable, adjustable valvetrain on your 390 or 428 Streeet car. Includes new hand assembled Adjustable Rocker Assemblies with Solid T-6000 Aluminum Spacers and 16 Ball and Cup pushrods. Just remove your old, non adjustable rockers and pushrods and replace with these, set your valves and go. Will gain lift, and rpm over stock. Sold as new."
Sold as new could either mean it's new, or been reconditioned back to new spec, so that tells us nothing.
is DSC a reputable company? would you or have you ever ordered anything from them?
I can get a HV oil pump for about $20 more dollars in the kit. Should i still get it any way just for the security blanket. Melling HV oil Pump MEL-M57HV from summit says that it flows 25% more then OEM
and then get the oil driveshaft ARP-154-7902 for $16.88 or still no need with the new racker shafts?
How about i would like to replace the old cam bolts from the phillips head cap screws to 6 point bolt heads can i just get a schedule 8 bolts and change them or is it something special to them?
any other bolt kits that i should order from summit? if so what ar ethe part numbers
Yes Dennis at DSC is a very good vendor. It looks like the only thing in that rocker kit thats used may be the aluminum stands. The rest of the assy looks all new but ask. You can go with a std oil pump or maybe look into a blueprinted pump from www.precisionoilpumps.com if you can swing the extra. Doug is a great vendor also. Ask him about his rocker setup also! he has lots of things that are not on his site. His prices are also VERY GOOD. I just picked up a set of his HD rocker shafts for $129pr. Elsewhere they were $150-165 for the same shafts. Shop around. G.
You could get the High Volume pump and ARP shaft if you want to. It certainly wont hurt anything. It's just that with the new rockers and rocker shafts you really dont need to. It's your money, if it makes you feel better do it. I am running the Melling HV pump and ARP shaft, if that tells you anything.
You probably could replace those phillips head screws with Grade 8 bolts, but watch out that the head doesn't interfere with the timing gear. You may have to do some griding on the head to clearance 'em. Also, be sure to get the thread area in the block for those degreased REAL GOOD and use plenty of Loctite on the bolts / screws. Having a cam walk forward because of a loose retention plate is no fun at all.
You could get ARP rod bolts, for extra peace of mind. The stock ones would probably hold anything you're gonna throw at it, but you never know... (I did get ARP rod bolts for mine)
Those rod bolts would be nice and a very good idea. Speaking of Loctite they are giving away free samples of blue or red on their website. I'll get the link and post it. It's over at net54 site if anyones interested. G.
