Steering Damper 2005 Sd

My 2005 4X4 SD has too much steering oscillation when it hits a bump or manhole cover with just one front wheel. I spoke to my dealer about the TSB regarding this problem. Now it has a steering damper OEM, and now Rancho offers a OEM replacement for the 2005. I assume this would be better than the OEM shock? Anyone done this on a 05 yet. This truck is stock, no lift.

about 55 dollars internet. Is your truck a 05? How many miles before the leak?

Not sure about the '05, but my '01 with "heavy service suspension" came with the damper. Within a few hundred miles it leaked it's guts, and didn't work worth anything even when it still had all it's oil.

I replaced with a Rancho, and no more problems.

I just checked gorancho.com and it shows 2005 stabilizers, but they bolt to the OE mounts. If you do not have the mounts, get the TSB done (under warranty) and then replace the stocker with a Rancho if it doesn't do enough.

Go for the Rancho, it's $44 at Summit Racing. Or see this site's sponsors, someone might carry it.

is this TSB just for 4x4 trucks, or 2wd as well?

I'll agree that the Rancho SS works MUCH better then the stock absorber. With the stock absorber, the slightest bump would jar the wheel out of my hand. Since the Rancho install, it has only happened once and it was barely noticeable.

usually by 150 k they do like marking their teritory ... so i woulda assumed the same thing too ... dont feel bad .... hehe ...

now about the 05, thats something i would make them fix on principle ... make ford know they got a bad supplier on their dampers.

I was just dealing with that steering problem cause it wasn't that bad on mine. Today I had some Toyo Open Country ATs put on 285/70/17. Rides a lot better. Expansionion joints much less noticable and guess what? Steering problem gone on all but the worst parts of the road. Those BFG Rugged Trails seemed OK, I only replaced them cause they were a little small. They're load range D but they have the exact weight rating as the BFGs except at 65 psi. I'll never load the truck enough for it to matter. So I'm thinking that the tires are at least part of the problem. I'll have to check that stabilzer too if they're as crappy as everyone says.

I went an ordered the rancho ss today..part number RS5413 FOR A 2005 SD 4X4 OEM INSTALL, 52.90 out the door Summit Racing. The part is new so 10 day back order. For fifty dollars, I won't waste a whole day at the dealer for the same OEM shock by Ford. Has to be better.

So think about this...Ford puts Rancho Shocks as part of the OFF ROAD Package, but no name Steering Stabilizer??? Makes you wonder.

My 05 has the FX4 and Heavy Duty front suspension and also gets the 'shakes' when it hits potholes and when crossing railroad tracks.

I just ordered the Rancho RS 5413 steering stabilizer from Rocky Mountain Suspension for $51.80.
I do find it ironic that the shocks are Rancho but not the stabilizer.

The FX4 package doesn't use the top quality Rancho's either. They "might" be the 5000 series... the same shock used on the stabalizer.

A counter guy at 4Wheel Parts told me they were the equivelant of the Rancho RSX shocks. I can't find a part number on the shock. Another guy I talked to today who has been in the aftermarket truck business for decades said that they're just Ford shocks with that fake red boot, white paint and Rancho stickers. I think Tenneco makes Fords shocks though.

That would be FMC, cost more to counterfeit the shocks than to cut a deal with Rancho for real shocks...kidding aside, I am sure Rancho does a big bulk run for ford at about 5 dollar a shock build cost. Why would Rancho risk reputation for Ford. Just another urban legend, or should I say Auto part store legend.
