Does anyone know the size of a semitrailer transmission gear? (width, diameter)
Do you know the cost of producing such a gear? It seems gears are pretty expensive. I wonder why. I know that sometimes a crown ring and pinion for even a Ford truck can cost over $100. Seems pretty expensive for a piece of mechanical device.
I wonder if it's cost of the metal and the machining or some other factors.
Biggest gear in a truck tranny is about 7 or 8 inches across, and an inch wide. The next one is about 7 or 7 1/2 inches by 2. They go on down like this to about 4 inches across.
But then, in a truck transmission, there are 2 countershafts, and an auxilliary section with 2 more countershafts.
The machining costs are a major factor. The parts are heat treated and ground. Parts cost always varies greatly with production numbers and many choices are involved.
