The Key cylinder in my 1988 f150 XLT Lariat (tilt Wheel) starts the truck, but I have to manually turn the key from start to run, as no spring return is present. I replaced the key cylinder mechanism with a new one from the auto-parts store, still no spring return from the start position. I even looked at a separate key cylinder mechanism from another auto-parts store. The spring return is not built into the key cylinder, but must be in the column.
Does anyone know how I fix this? Also the blinker cam must be broken, because I have to hold the blinker up to turn right.
I believe that the spring to return the key to the on position is in the ignition switch. It is located on the top part of the lower end of the column.
Also, in regards to the turn signal, you are right. I had the same problem and had to replace the turn cancel cam. Do not get the "Help" products cam. You have to make a few modifications to it before it will work. And to think that it lists our trucks as being an application for it. If you can't find any other though, here are the mods. On the back of the cam you notice 2 long paperclip like wires on it. You need to trim about 1/16" off each end of the longer one. Hope that helps.
