U.S.A. - World's 911?

I read today that North Korea is about to reactivate their atomic power plant which will allow them to produce material for a nuclear weapon. I also read that Iran is working a deal with Russia for a power plant with the same capability. Since our current foreign policy is that pre-emptive wars are OK and we (the U.S.) are the arbiter as to which countries will or will not have these weapons, will they join Iraq on our hit list?
I also read that we are going to deploy the "Star Wars" missile defense system in the hope that it will someday be capable of actually working (provided of course that the enemy uses no counter measures).
I will certainly sleep better knowing that it is in place.
We won the cold war with our economy, not our military, but even the world's strongest economy does not have infinite resources. We cannot afford to be the world's 9/11.
I believe that while we face some serious challenges from determined enemies, our greatest peril may lie in our own spending habits and priorities.
As I read my papers this morning, I decided I'd put this out on FTE to see what you think.

You should have been reading the paper last week. I expected North Korea to take our money in the 'no nuke' agreement they made with us and lie about it. Last week I read the Presidential candidate for SOUTH Korea President rode the anti-American sentiment into office.

All this over a traffic accident?

Aren't the South Koreans the ones we fought to save from the North Koreans 50 years ago? Spilled a lot of American blood there? Spent Trillions of dollars over the past fifty years in their country? Bought they Hundaes and Goldstars? I say we pull out and let the North Koreans eat them and then China can wipe Koreans off the map, why should I think differently? Please post and tell me.

I personally support defense spending. I understand, the governement will mis-manage just about anything they handle. But with defense spending comes alot of technology research and advancement that many industries cannot afford or are unwilling to do. This technology often ends up back in the commercial sector to the consumers benefit.

There are a thousand other governement programs that I would like to see get whacked before defense spending gets cut. There are way too many self-serving government programs in operation. They are pretending to help people, just to keep themselves in a cushy government job.

I realize that defese spending is also mis-managed. But, I believe there are long lasting benefits that are not always immediately apparent.

As far as our role as World Police, would you want any other country doing it?

I think that countries with anti-American sentiments are stupid for one major reason: Americans like to travel to exotic places and spent lots of money. We pulled out of Vietnam 27 years ago, and already it's considered relatively safe for Americans to travel there. Why? Because the Vietnamese government recognizes that American tourists spend ALOT OF MONEY! Thailand was the same way, same with India.
If Iran and Iraq were smart, they would quit sponsoring all of the American hate and start doing what we ask them to, and open their doors to travel. I would LOVE to visit Baghdad, it's supposed to be a beautiful city, same with Tehran, Damascus, Imman, Beirut...if it were safe to travel there, I would do it, and so would many, many other Americans. But they are too religion-stupid to recognize it, and so their people starve and their economies crumble. It's foolish for any country not to try to form good relations with the United States...even if they don't agree with us. We are the undisputed heavyweight champions of luxury spending and tourist spending, but many countries fail to recognize that and use it to their advantage. Instead, they demonize us for being wealthy. HEY MAN! Let us come over there and spend some money! Do the little things we ask like "don't make biological weapons", and "quit committing genocide", and "grant our inspectors access", and we will leave you alone and start importing your products! It's really that simple.
But no, they dream of someday RULING THE WORLD!! bwoohahahahah! Saddam Hussein reminds me of the Brain from Pinky and the Brain.

Every time I hear a Korean tell me they don't want us here I tell them that I don't want to be here, It was wonderful to have to leave my family behind to come to such an ungrateful country and can I have a ticket home. One more thing I say to them is how are they going to like communism seeing how North Korea will happily move south and take over once we leave.

AND I have to drive a damn Kia!

Brokebonco,

Remember that everytime you tell something to that effect to a Korean it doesn't help our cause. You and I can see the reasoning behind your statements, but there is no reasoning with them. Their minds are made up. The best thing you can do is politely excuse yoursely and leave the offending Korean's company.

I'm up in Area I, 2ID now where we've been locked down to some degree more than not in the last two months. The problems are starting to blow over on their own. No sense in pissing someone off and possibly causing an incident. Need I sight the examples of the LTC being attacked outside Youngsan (no not bad but it could have been) or the soldier that was accosted on the train and taken to the college stadium. There have also been other incidents that have not been brought to light as of yet.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is: Do your job; do your time over here; and go home when your done. Don't try to change the anti-US sentiment directly. Try to change it by helping ensure no more incidents occur.

LT, good reply. I had two tours with 2ID, just do your duty and leave the politics to those that are politicians.

Yeah, because politicians are REALLY good at making things easier for our troops overseas!
I wonder how many South Koreans would schlitz their panties if the United States pulled out and they had nothing to stop the North from pouring over the border and occupying their country. "Gee, Mr. Korean, how do you like your free-market economy? And your open trade ability with the United States? You do like it? Alot? That's what I thought. Consider it our gift to you, along with your political regime, WHICH AIN'T COMMUNIST!! Now, get back to the Kia plant and thank God Americans buy your cheap azzz cars!"
