I dont like my battery under the floor on my 56. Just wondering what other locations work well?

Mine is going up against the passenger side frame rail just behind the engine in my 48, but it will be accessed from the bottom not through the floor.

When I bought my '53 the battery was mounted in the bed. It was always in the way because sometimes I haul stuff. I put it back under the floor, thats the best place for me. The only other place is under the hood and my big block fills that up. I'll restrain myself from girly motor jokes.

I plan on changing over to an Optima battery in a fitted battery box (sealed gelcell no fumes or vent needed, can be placed in any position, even upside down) I am considering placing it on top the frame at the firewall on the passenger side or on the outside of the frame under the fender. I definitely don't want it under the floor any more where I'd have to cut the rug for access.

I consider the winged windows, cowl vent, push button starter and the floorboard battery tray as part of the nostalgia factor in these old trucks. I have the optima battery under my floor so hopefully; I will only have to pull the carpet to service it every few years, something I can live with.

there is an auxillary battery box available from Ford, was used in E-series vans. It will mount in the stock (effie) location but it drops down to service the battery. Kind of the best of both worlds, for me at least. Don't overlook making a box like this, it really isn't that difficult. good luck

Talking

My battery is under the floor where Mr. Ford intended it to be. I don't plan on moving it, but I have to admit it's kind of a pain to get to if I give someone a jump start (or if I need one!). But then, I'm also not planning to put carpet on the floor, since I prefer the stock style rubber floor mat in a truck.

I wonder: Do you suppose it would be difficult to cut a hole in the carpet to go around the battery lid, then adhere carpet to the lid? You'd need to bind the edges to make it look good, and leave an opening for the latch, but it might work pretty cool that way. If nothing else, your passengers will always be asking what that little handle in the floor is for.

I plan to pick up the Optima this weekend so I'll play around with locations. I had seen drop down type holders but I may consider building one of my own and mounting the battery on it's side so the cover and terminals would face out when it dropped down. hmmm...

For now I'm going to have to put mine in the bed. I was contemplating adding an old deco style metal box to cover the whole thing up with.......I'm not that close yet. Maybe my magic wand will start working and I won't have to worry about it....the danged thing seems to be on the fritz

Years ago I had a 59 Ranchero, which was basically a wagon with the top cut off. This meant that the whole bed had a false bottom. If you pulled the bed floor up there was the spare tire well and a huge well where the rear seat floor was(or would have been on a wagon) It made a great place to put the battery and toolbox and the spare. It sure kept that little cab clean.

You guys with drop down battery boxes, don't you have to jack the truck up to get the battery down? My carpet wasn't that great so I cut out a hole the threw a set of rubber Harley mats in there. Didn't have to get in there once in two years.

Mine is under the right front fender behind the wheel. I built a custom box for it there.

I bought an aftermarket fiberglass inner fender for the passenger side of my truck that has a battery recess molded into the fender. The battery mounts high on the inner fender about 6" behind the air deflector. The inner fender does not have any brackets or hardware. I bought a metal tray & hold down clamp for a Mustang and mounted it to the fiberglass.

Under the floor where Henry put it. Didn't want to add to the top heavy problem. It's a pain in this location. I velcroed the rug there but it's still a pain. Build the drop down box and share the details Chuck. The store bought kit is too expensive.
