2.9 Crankshaft Endplay

2.9 Crankshaft Endplay
A friend of mine has an '89 B-II with a 2.9 and auto trans that has excessive crankshaft endplay. So bad, in fact, that the flywheel now interferes with the starter. I have an '89 B-II w/Auto "parts vehicle" and I thought we could use the engine out of it. Guess what, this engine also has excessive crankshaft endplay; about 3/16". I checked the endplay on my '86 Ranger w/5 speed as well as an '88 Ranger w/5speed and both have negligible endplay in their cranks. I have always been led to believe that engines with std. trans. were most prone to endplay wear due to the thrust applied through the clutch action. Is excessive crankshaft endplay a common problem with these engines? I don't recall any discussion about it in the past. Any comments from others with experience with this problem will be appreciated. Thanks, Brian G. NY
