Wheel bearings !
I'm new in the form but not to the sight but I have a question about greasing trailer wheel bearings.
On my boat trailer I had those auto greasers with the spring and grease zert in the middle, just hook up to a grease gun and go..
Why would that work on my flat bed and Travel Trailer as well ??
A friend of mine and I were talking as this came up and this poped into my head, I'm sure it's been discussed but can I get one more reply ??
Thanks
Seeping through the seal is harmless only if you do not have brakes. It just makes a mess on the inside of the tire rim.
If you have brakes, leaking grease can render them useless.
I have a small utility trailer with BB's and no brakes. I don't worry about the messy rims.
My travel trailer has a Dexter axle with EZ lube hubs. This design has the zerk fitting on the end of a hollow spindle. Grease is forced through the spindle, through the inner bearings, through the hub, through the outer bearings and back out the cap. No pressure is maintained anywhere in the system. It's a nice design.

Thanks I'll go right now and check my TT..
Just a thought, can I add the E-Z Lube or would that require replacing way too much stuff and $$ ???
Also, a question off bearings.. Mine is a Layton Skyline TT.. In the door where the large electrical hook up is there is another reg. size plug ( male ) not but about 2 ft long.. Does anyone know what it is for ???
Thanks
You'd have to change spindles to get the E-Z Lube system; probably easier/cheaper to replace the whole axle.

The E-Z Lube spindles aren't pressurized, so they're not hard on grease seals. BTW, you can buy double-lip grease seals; I've had them on my trailer with an E-Z Lube axle for over 3 years, and have yet to see any grease on the inside of my wheels.

Bearing Buddies are great for boat trailers because the contraction caused by dunking a warm hub into cold water is less likely to suck in water (presuming the grease is still fluid enuf that the spring makes a difference). If I were using BBs on an axle, I would look up and get the double-lip seals next time I repacked (www.dexteraxle.com) -- On my relatively small #9 EZLube axle, it is a 10-60 seal vice the standard 10-9 seal.
