okay since i fixed my exhaust, my truck has been slow, it can barely do a brake torque. i dont know if it is the engine or a plugged cat, but i was wondering on how to determine if it was a plugged cat?
it seems that after it gets out of first gear, it gets faster. but sometimes it take 1 minute or so for it to get to almost fast speed
any ideas??? tahnks a ton!
So just what did 'fixing' your exhaust consist of? The truck had normal power up till you worked on the exhaust, and immediately afterwards it's down on power? Or was it more gradual? Did you work on anything else while the exhaust was being done?
I've seen a few vehicles with a plugged cat, generally when you get it up to speed and really put your foot in it you get a loud hissing sound out of the exhaust. You should have two cats, one right behind the other. If everything else checks out, as far as the engine is concerned (pull some codes, maybe yank out the SPOUT connector and plug it back in to make sure it's connecting properly) then you could pull both cats and put in a temporary bypass tube to see if it runs better. If so, replace the cats.
How about fuel delivery? Got good pressure? Does it seem to accelerate better on partial throttle but bog down when you floor it? (This could be symtomatic of low fuel pressure OR plugged cats). Anyway, hope there's something in all this that's of use. -TD
well it i had a leak on my passenger sidee intake manifold ( there a pic on my gallery of it ) and i had a bad flange/donut so i fixed that and after that i started having this problem. the stuff you said made a lot of sense tho, and i have pulled the codes b4 and the codes i got were high speed coolant temp sensor and exhaust bank 1 and bank 2 and that is it. i already clean MAF and TB and what not.
i will take a look at what you siad tho. but i think my truck only has one cat tho, but i am thinking about taking the cat off of our old explorer and putting it on my truck since the exploder isnt running
no it was not really gradual, it pretty much right after, but i took a look at my air filter and to say the least, that was not a pretty sight. so i just bought a new filter today and am putting it in tomorrow.
and yes it does seem to bog down quite a bit when i floor it.
how do i check fuel pressure??
do you think both of the cat would be bad?? cuz i odnt wnat to replace both cats, at most i will jjust keep one cat. but i will get around to checking it out. thanks
Fuel pressure is checked via the schrader valve on the fuel rail. It is tested KOEO and KOER. In cases of stubborn starting and when it's suspected there is bleed down in the fuel system, it's checked after sitting overnight and before starting. There is a fuel pressure gauge made specifically for testing. They can be rented. I've also used a tire pressure gauge in a pinch but they are not as accurate.
