Alternator Core Credit?

Alternator Core Credit?
I just replaced the alternator in my 1997 Mercury Mountaineer (160,000 miles). For interest, I looked at the prices of OEM alternators on some of the online Ford parts sites. Interestingly, it seems that they all give a core credit once the old alternator is returned. I assume that dealers also get a similar credit. How often do dealers pass along this credit to their customers? From my invoice, there is no evidence of any sort of core credit.
