My buddy has a 99 ford escort which wouldn't start over the weekend. I went to the gas station where it was stranded and it was just really, really corroded. I replaced the connectors, brushed the posts, brushed the wires, and it was lookin' pretty. Now there was this other part which I haven't seen before (I don't work on cars TOO often).
It appears to be a piece of copper with attaches to the connector on the negative terminal, plugs in to something, and sort of hooks back up with the negative line. It is extremely corroded. The car will not start if it is not hooked up, so we cleaned it and sort of jerry rigged it up as best we could. I told him to take it to autozone or something.
They said it was a dealer only part and Ford said it was $225! Serisouly, it looks like a piece of copper w/ a plug.
1. What is this part and what is its purpose?
2. Does it really cost $225?
I used to own a 98 so I have a haynes manual and see what your talking about. The copper piece should unattach from the black connector. That should allow you to clean it. Get some PB Blaster and spray it down, if you can't think of anyway to get it to work junkyards have alot of escorts. Eric
