Been loading lots of heavy rocks for a wall in my '99 ext cab 4x2. The tailgate takes the hit before I slide the rocks forward. Some are 200 lbs. Does anyone know how much weight it will hold before the rock and the gate land on my feet? Has anyone removed their tailgate? How long does it take?
The tail gate comes right off- no tools required. The cables come off at the top by pushing a safety clip. Hinge the tail gate half way down and the right side should pop right out of the hinge(it kind of slotted). Move gate to the right to get left side of hinge out of its cup. It's actually much easier than I'm making it out to be.
on my old T2.3 ranger i used to haul my bike around alot and when loading up the bike half the weight of the bike + me would be on the tailgate at once as i pushed it up the ramp.you figure atleast 400 lbs. or so at one time would be on it.Never moved one bit..
I wouldn't want to drop that 400 lbs. on it at once though,i'm sure after a few times it would buckle..
ive read about tailgates getting stolen from car lots a time or two, its easy enough to do, but i havent heard of anyone getting their tailgate ripped off, though it could happen.
The cables are stronger than the steel! I only had my Ranger 2 months when I picked up a LARGE tree from the nursery. The root-ball on this tree was massive, and they loaded it into the pickup with a tractor. When I got home and started rolling the root ball out the back, it suddenly sunk 2 inches when it hit the tailgate. The hollow tailgate had collapsed, but fortunately for me, the cables were strong enough to support the weight. My guess is that tree was well over 600lbs. I think you're safe with 200lb boulders...
Do tailgates ever get stolen out of parking lots I wonder, if it's that easy.
This is exactly why they started putting locks on the tailgates of the Super Duty's. They were easy to steal and expensive to replace. Owners and insurance companies were complaining. I haven't heard of the same thing happening to Rangers though.

good luck, jim
Just had mine off the other day, it is easy to remove. I recommend having an extra pair of hands to help you put it back on, though. It's not heavy but it is kind of awkward. It would be a shame to scratch the paint trying to do it yourself, I almost did.
