I have an 85 F 150 explorer with an I-6, 4.9l. 1st gear doesnt have too much power. 2nd really jumps but third has no power at all. 4th gear is ok going down the highway. Am I having clutch problems or transmission problems or ignition problems. Just put news plugs and wires in it. Also sometimes when I come to a stop and turn off the engine i hear a thwpppt noise like a firecraker out of the exhaust. Nothing really loud though. Any ideas as to where I should start?
Clutches usually show signs of slipping with increased engine rpm, and no extra, or loss of forward motion. If that isn't happening, look into the problem a little further.
You say you here a "backfire" type noise when you come to a stop and shut the engine off. This is along with replacement of wires and plugs, but did you replace the cap and rotor as well? Did you check the timing? Is this an injected truck or a carberetted truck? If carb'd, how long since the carb was last adjusted, and if need be, rebuilt? If injected, have the fuel rail and injectors ever been cleaned and tested to see if they're in good shape? I would also dare add check your coolant level, as well as consider the last time it was changed, as heat can create such an issue, as well. Just some thoughts, but get back to us with a few more specifics.
Check for plugged catalytic converter... sounds to me like your exhaust is restricted... if you have the 4-speed manual NP-435 and that I-6, your symptoms through the gearing sounds familiar... 1st gear - only good for grunting... 2nd gear - gets you going.... 3rd gear - you wound out 2nd too long and 3rd don't have much range left... 4th gear - now your rolling...
Thanks guys, I dont thing it a clutch problem, more like exhaust and emissions problems now that I look around under the hood some more. Gotta admit....its fun but also frustrating
