Was driving home in my 98 F150 last night when my oil pressure gauge dropped to nothing. When this happened engine started knocking, oil light and ABS light came on. Pulled over and shut truck off. Waited about 5 minutes and restarted engine, everything was fine. I drove about a mile and it happened again. Had to pull over and let it sit for 5 minutes or so 6 times before able to make it the 10 miles to home. I'm thinking maybe oil pump is overheating? Any suggestions?
Oil level is on full mark.
Also developed a ping recently. Mechanic told me it was a spark knock, but now I'm wondering if the two could be related.
Any codes? I personally wouldn't drive it anymore until you get it scanned to see exactly what codes there are. They sell OBD-II code scanners for about $50 at Auto Zone. Maybe your oil pump is going out? If it is, that's not a good thing.

my dad had the same problem. he got his truck used. the oil filter was clogged. a heavy clump of old oil must of came loose or something. is was unusaual to say the lest. changed the oil filter and oil about 4 time in one month and no more problems. try changing the oil.
You'll have to take the oil pan off. I don't know how much of a pain it's going to be but then you will have access to the pick up. It will probably a few inches in dia. and have a screen. On my Mustang it unbolts from the oil pump. I would unbolt it and clean it up real nice to be sure everything is clear.
Did you change the oil recently to a synthetic? If so that could of dislodged something. After thinking about it "Joe Finn" is probably correct as it did go away and allow you to drive it again. But as mentioned before I wouldn't drive it until it's fixed
There is a good chance that you will have to unbolt the motor mounts and trans mounts and then jack the front of the engine up so that there is enough room to clear the pan out. I've done it on my 97 and it isn't as bad as it sounds
Trying to get oil pan off 98 F150 to check pump and pickup. Have motor and trans mounts unbolted, but after jacking front of motor, not getting enough clearance to remove oil pan.
Any suggestions???
Jacked motor and trans as high as they would go and still not enough room to get pan off. Put it all back together, changed oil and filter and added jug of engine flush. Ran truck for 8 minutes, changed oil and filter again. Drove truck about 20 miles and so far so good.

I'm am glad to see that it worked for you. I am having the same problem with my 98 expedition 4.6. I was thinking of getting a new motor, but I think I will do the filter and pick up thing. I want to do a engine flush also but I would recommend using the machine that allows the detergent to flow through your engine. The only thing I can warn you about is that you may have flushed some of the slug from the top of the engine that will eventually settle down in the oil pan and cause this problem again. You will need to get that oil pan off in the end. I am fortumate enough to be military and I will go to the auto craft shop on post. There, at the auto craft shop, I will raise the truck using the lift and lossen the mounts and lower the truck while placing a brace on the engine. This should cause the engine to be lifted enough to remove the oil pan.
