is the tranny a auotmatic if so it sounds like you are really low on tranny fluid for it not to move right away and the holleys you were told wrong about a good easy to tune holley should get you plenty of mpgs and power the edelbrock/carters just don't cut it

Well I can't really say anything about that particular holley. I can say from what I have seen from my Holley what you heard was true. Edelbrock/carter are better fuel economy carbs with good street capabilities and the holley is more of a all out performance carb with less gas milage. That is just my opion/experience. Others may and probually will disagree. Go to holley.com and have a look around there is a section that shows you how big of a carb for your engine. Check it out there is some cool info there.

For the rear gears there SHOULD be a little tag on the rear differential cover bolts. There should be numbers on it. If not post in the gear and drivetrain section they can help you figure out what you have.

Your tranny sounds like it may be low on fluid or going bad. Make sure it is at the correct level on the dipstick while the truck is running. If it is full post in the tranny section with the symptoms. They can help you there. I recomend doing a search first though. Hope this helps alittle.

Look on the sticker on the drivers door. there will be a letter code there indicating which rear end you have. Post the code here. Someone here can tell what you have with that code.

Tranny? possibly a C6. How long since a fluid change? How many miles? a Klunk in reverse could mean new universal joints are in your future.

How do you use a vacuum gauage to adjust the idle screws?

Set your idle speed to proper RPM(looks like you have), adjust each screw to where the vacuum gauge reads the highest while using the idle speed screw to keep the idle speed at the proper RPM. You would likely want to LIGHTLY bottom each idle mixture screw to have a base setting to return to if it all goes to pot.
Make sure your vacuum gauge is hooked to manifold vacuum(hi at idle).

To find your gear ratio mark a tire and the driveline, then jack up that tire and count the number of revolutions the driveline makes for one turn of the tire. That will give you a rough indication.

Actually, on an open differential, if you only jack up one tire, it will spin twice as much as the gear ratio, so be sure to account for that.

Thanks for the instructions on the setting the idle screws!

I have no idea when was the last time the tranny fluid was changed - I got the truck just a month ago. I will do that soon here. I will post back with what I can find on the rear end.

Discovered one more thing - my exhaust pipes are badly cracked just after the mufflers. Should have checked that before. How does it affect gas mileage? They were dual system. I will post in the exhaust system to find out where I should get a good set of exhaust pipes - still would like to maintain the dual system for the sound, unless performance is adversely affected.

Any carb that is spread bore (i think) Carter Thermoquad or the Quadra-jet carbs are the fuel economy carbs, if your intake is setup for them I would recomend trying one, if its square bore which I'm guessing it is, stick with the afb or the avs, there always seems to be somthing wrong with the holleys on my buddie's trucks so much so that I have no respect for those carbs.

I dont really see the reasoning for installing a 4 barrel carb on a 300 six. A 1bbl carb does such a good job running the motor. Why argue with success? Save your money, and gas, and stick to the YF style.

Take care

Latest finding: fuel pressure showed 10 psi !!! Don't know if the guage I am using is screwed up or if it is the actual pressure. Will re-check that. Anyways, installed a pressure regulater and brought it down to 6 psi.

Got new exhaust installed too.

Now that the pressure is down how does it run? Also what type/style exhaust did you go with? How do you like it?

Well, not much of a difference around town so far. I need to take it down to highway and kick it. I will recheck the mileage again.

I just had dual exhaust put on with 18" glass packs. Quiter than before, but more of a deep rumbling sound. I kind of like it better.

Hi guys, I went ahead and installed a Edelbrock 1406. Drove the truck last night and it drove as good as it can be !!

BUT !!!! Here is the problem - this morning when I started it, it started to rev very high even at idle. Rose to about 2000 - 2500 rpm. I saw that the throttle linkage is getting stuck somewhere. Because when I pulled and let go, it dropped down to normal rpm. Did any of you experienced this before? Wonder what I can do to fix this.
