Here's the skinny. I have a 99 Ranger XLT 3.0 auto w/OD Flex Fuel 73000 miles. This morning when I started it up the check engine light stayed on, the ABS light stayed on, the O/D light was flashing, the speedometer no longer works and the trans won't shift out of 1st gear and it does have reverse. My initial assumption was the trans is bad. Since I have been very meticulous about its care, I hope that isn't it. But after thinking about the ABS light being on, I'm not so sure. From what I know, the trans and ABS are different systems and 1 of them acting up would not interfere with the other. But anythings possible. I have been towing my boat with it. I have a 19 footer and the boat ramp is 3 miles away. It tows about 2 times a month. The truck had 60000 miles on it when I bought the boat and I had the trans serviced at that time to ensure that there were no problems with it. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Ugly
Exact same thing happened to me about 6 months ago to my old Ranger (same model and year). I think it's not uncommon. You might have to replace the speed sensor on the rear differential. It's about a $10 part and takes a few minutes to replace. Really easy. The hardest part for me was to locate someone in town that had it in stock. Advance auto part and Autozone didn't have it on hand, but NAPA had it. Just call around.
Shure sounds like the ABS speed sensor, it's wiring or electrical connection, to me too. The Tranny, ABS, Speedo, Cruise Control, all take inputs from this sensor to properly do their thing. It's located atop the rear differential housing with one hold down bolt & one electrical connctor. It's a snug fit, so after removing the hold down bolt & electrical connector you might have to wiggle it with some help to get it out. Take the time to read the links to other posts Ledbetter gave, they are worthwhle reads on the subject. If you have access to a scantool, or can get the vehicle to your favorite autoparts store for a no cost computer scan, it could confirm our suspecions. Let us know what you find.
I took the Ranger to a transmission shop and they said it was the speed sensor. Thanks to you guys I had an idea what it was and thats what I told them to check. Otherwise they might have tried to hit me with a new tranny. Cost of $108 and works fine now.
