Oil Filter changes

Grr..

Is there some easy trick to getting the oil filter off? The oil filter on my 360 is perpendicular to the block (it screws in sideways). It screws onto this other piece that is bolted onto the block. Well, when I get it unthreaded, it hits the steering shaft! It was a pain to get off and figure out exactly what angle was best to attempt to get the filter off. I finally had to force it a little against the steering shaft to get it off. The new one had to be 'convinced' a little past the shaft so I could position it to go on.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Should it be this difficult? Should it be getting stuck on the steering shaft when I try to remove or replace the oil filter?

Are you hitting the pitman or the tie rod? Are you on ramps or stands? Try letting the suspension drop like the truck is on a lift. My only complaint is the oily mess on the xmember. You could go with a remote filter mount kit.

go to pawengineparts.com and order a oil filter relocator kit, and all of your problems will be solved...*****pt for where to mount your filter....which is entirely up to thou!!

btw you'll have to order a catalog for like $6 or so, but you get that back with your first order!!! yay!!

I am hitting the actual steering column shaft that goes into the manual steering box. I don't think there is anything I can do to move that.. as far as I know that doesn't move too easily. The truck it just sitting on it's tires, as it is a hiboy, I don't need a lift to do oil changes.. I just sit under the truck

Were there originally shorter filters back when the truck was first made? I still don't get why they would make it that difficult to remove the filter in the first place. When used to have a few older CH**y's, the filter was right there and you just unscrewed it and dropped it out.

I know about the relocator kits that you can get, and that is an option.. I just didn't know why they made it that way in the first place or if there originally were shorter filters there.

That truck is supposed to have a shorter filter on it. If all they give you for a filter number is the FL1A, then try one for a Dodge 360. They are a shorter, fatter filter, the same thread and baseplate size, and actually the correct filter for your truck.

I have the FL1A on mine and have plenty of room to remove it. I also have power steering.

fl300 is the shorty version of the fl-1a... popular filter to run on turbo'd 5.0 mustangs on account of tight space.
hope that helps.
