well, i'm about to buy a 98 expedition tomorrow so i thought i'd join a forum for expy's!
it's a 98 XLT customized. the outside looks really sweet (silver with brush guard, fog lights, tail light guards, fender flares, and rims). BUT the inside is very blah. it needs more buttons and lights! haha. i'm coming from a 96 limited explorer fully loaded. that thing looked like an x-mas tree lit up at night and i loved it!
the expedition has the analog climate control ***** which looks kind of funky to me. i know the 99 and up eddie bauer models have the same exact digital climate controls as my 96 limited explorer has in it. i'm wondering if it's at all possible to put my explorers digital controls in place of the expy's analog?
any info would be appreciated. i'm sure this is a weird question.
This has been discussed on the Heating & AC Forum, but I'm not aware of anyone actually accomplishing it. I would certainly NOT want to go from a different platform (Explorer to Expy). The control panel itself, even if identical, would be the easy part.
Hate to rain on your parade, but this is something that a real experienced tech MIGHT be able to do, given enough time and money. If you don't have all three (or an excess of two out of the three!), I would recommend against it.
thanks for the replies... however that does suck! i'm not impressed with the looks on the inside of the expy. i was hoping for an easy pull out and plug in type of job.
Go to the local library and download the Alldata wiring diagrams, vacuum diagrams, and HVAC diagrams. Then, pick up a copy of the service manual on CD from ebay. With the diagrams and such, you should be able to make sense of it so you know what to buy, and what to modify. I say git'r'done!!! There's no reason you can't give it a shot.
well... things are on hold. i got a call from the dealership saying a different manager was there on the weekend and the current manager can't let it go for as low as i was quoted. they want $2,000 more today!! NOT very happy and the GM will be getting a call from me later today. i was supposed to pick it up tonight.
uh oh, I would indeed talk to the GM. Did you get the price quote in writing? Just remember that with car dealerships, and most places in general, prices is not actually price.
Well maybe its for the best and now you will find one with the automatic climate controls. The 99 and up had some improvements, if you like lights and fancey stuff I have a 2001 Eddie Baurer and it has just about every option. with gas prices high you should be able to scoop up an Expy for a good price. I bought mine in 4/04 and now in my area a year later I could get the same with similar milage for about $4k-$5k less. A combination of redesigned models getting market share and gas prices. We do love ours and "knock on wood" have not had any problems and the gas milage is not all that bad compared to our 92 Explorer we upgraded from.
yeah, i'm looking at a fully loaded 99 EB now with a billet grill, gibson exhaust, clear corners, DVD player, and an extra TV screen mounted in the front dash. it has 73,000 miles and i got them down to $12,900. I think that's a good price.
I need to see if they'll fix some problems first. It has a loud squeek coming from up front when you start it, the battery was dead and i want a new one, the rear doors have the locks removed so you have to open the doors from outside, and the radio is pure static. If they'll fix all those problems i might buy it.
Oh yeah... the rear looks like it's sagging. Could there be a problem with the compressor? How would i know?
If i do buy it i plan on getting it painted all jet black. It's marroon right now.
