I've read several post that suggest a vacuum gauge to assist in adjusting a carb. I think I'll let you convince me, if someone can tell me where to get one of reasonable quality. Does Advance Auto or Auto Zone sell a decent one? How much does one cost?
Either place should have a good one. Or NAPA. I really don't know about a specific brand. Just look at them and look at their visual quality. I don't remember what I paid for mine as I've had it 20 years or so. This will be a good addition to your tool box! Many uses. Yes they take the guess work out of adjusting a carb!!

Sure hope this isn't a goofy question but how do you adjust a carb. with a vacuum gauge? I've been using my gauge to check for Vacuum leaks and how many lbs. I get at idle. Is there any thing else I can check with this?
Hook the vacuum gauge to a source of full vacuum. Now find your air fuel mixture screw, or screws. There is one on a 1 bbl carb, 2 on a 2 and 4 bbl carb. They will be at the base of the carb. With the engine running and warmed up, turn the screws out one at a time slowly. 1/8 to no more than 1/4 turn at a time. Watch the gauge to see if the vacuum increases. If it does, keep turning it till the vacuum stops increasing. Then turn the screw back in a 1/4 turn. Then stop and go to the other screw and do the same. You can use a vacuum gauge to check for bad valve guides. Timing problems. Vacuum leaks. General condition of the motor.
