Engine temp / heater

I have a question.. when I was driving down the highway the other day my temp guage started to go up, so I decided that I'd take the heat and turn on the heater with the windows rolled down at full blast to see if I could get rid of the heat.. when I did this, my temp guage went all the way to the red.. what caused this? I thought it would cool down my engine, or did it?

If it's not low on coolant, i'd give the cooling system a good flush swap the T-stat and see how it does.

you might also be intereste in checking out the water pump .. i had the same problem when i was in stop and go traffic it would seem like it was going all the way up to top of norm and turned out thermo was a 190 and the water pump wasnt working at full efficiency
