I have the standard old 2150 Motorcraft 2 bbl on an 82 F-250 4x4, with the 400M engine. Recently it started blowing a lot of black smoke out the tail pipe at wide open throttle. Rebuilt the carb completely with a new float and everything. Thoroughly stripped it( if it unscrewed it came off or out ), cleaned it, blew all passages out with compressed air. Inspected all parts. Set the float properly. Still have the same problem. The jets matched. The carb had either never been rebuilt or it was rebuilt with a Ford kit, because it had Ford part numbers on the gaskets. Runs fine otherwise. I have rebuilt many of these carbs and never failed to heal one up. But this one has got me. Any ideas would be appreciated.
(1) Did you replace the EGR Spacer Plate Gasket ? I always replace this booger every time I loosen up any Ford carb.
(2) Try a fresh set up plugs! Fuel fouled plugs, from a over rich condition, will never really burn themselves clean after you correct the over rich condition.
(3) Unlikely, but, maybe not enough juice reaching the plugs because of a weakened ignition coil or coil wire ?
Phillip
Yes Phillip I replaced the EGR spacer plate gasket. I'm like you I always replace this gasket. I have wondered about weak ignition. These parts are pretty cheap, I may stick a new coil on it. Wires ohm check good. May pull the plugs and look at them too. Thanks.
