In about a month I'll be towing a 1999 Mazda FWD w/manual tranny half way across the country with my '02 F-150 4.6L. My towing package is rated at 5000 lbs. I have a couple questions.
First, for a trip that far would it be better to rent a tow dolly or a trailer? I'm wondering about ease of handling of such a long trip. I've done both locally, but neither for such a long distance.
Second, is there any reason I couldn't use the cruise control while towing, or would that not be a good idea?
I would rent a trailer on a trip that long, that should keep you within your rating. I also dont see why you couldnt use c/c as long as you are safe about it. Dont use it on curvy roads and in the rain, just stay out of overdrive.

I'm glad you mentioned overdrive. That was the third item I wanted to ask about, but my mind went blank. So, I should turn o/d off completely, eh? Sorry if that seems so basic, but most of my towing experience is with older trucks where o/d wasn't even an option.
A trailer is much safer. Especially if you have to back up.
On flat ground you may get by with OD, but I would lock it out. It keeps the engine in the preferred powerband and my truck gets better mileage when loaded and OD locked out.
I'm with the trailer, especially if it comes with a surge brake. Can't ever have enough brakes when trailering. Cruise is ok. In OD it seems to "hunt" a bit. Can't seem to decide between 3rd and 4th. I'd stick with Od on the flats also. Have a safe one.
