I have a 1989 ford f-150 4x4 with an I-6 with the mazda 5-speed trans, and im intrested in installing the i assume ford ZF trans. First off is this possible, if so what mods do i have to make if any, and will it be really worth it. im looking for a stump puller but good gas milage since i drive 100 round trip to work but like to play. My truck has 3:08 gears so i thought that the creeper would comp for the such high gearing and would still run at about 2000rpm at 65mph in overdrive. any help or comments would be greatful. thanks ahead of time!
If you're talking about the trans that was put in the 3/4 ton, I personally think it's an outstanding idea. Playing the odds, I will say this. Did Ford put a 302/351 in a 1/2 ton with the 5 speed? Did Ford put a 302/351 in a 3/4 ton with a 5 speed? Yes and Yes. What are the odds of producing two entirely different bellhousings, flywheels, etc for the two? Very Slim.
I am thinking about swapping my T-18 for the ZF in my 89 150 4x4. Does anyone know if this is a direct bolt in, or do I have to change Transfer case adapters or driveshaft lengths or anything else I can't think of? Anxiously awaiting some expert advice.
I am looking to do the same... have you gotten any prices for the tranny? Has anyone responded to you directly yet. Maybe we can share what we find out as we are both looking.
I checked the Kentucky Auto Recyclers website and they have the ZF's for around 850 bucks. I can't spare that kind of change right now, but I am just trying to learn as much about the swap as I can so I will be prepared for if and when I can afford it.

No I wasn't aware of that, but let me make so simple even you can understand it. The 351 and the 302 (5.0 and 5.8 for your metric minds) are the same basic engine. There was a 302 offered in the 1/2 ton and there was a 351 offered in the 3/4 ton, both with 5 speeds. Since one is a bolt in swap for the other (and for the purpose of trannys all I'm concerned with here is the bellhousing) it stands to reason that the 3/4 ton trans (and I don't know the model of it) granny low with overdrive should bolt up with no problems to replace the stock 1/2 ton 5 speed. NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
Can't get much past you can we? I knew that along time ago. I knew they were the same except a few things, I knew the blocks were the same. I just was saying you couldn't get a 351 in a 1/2ton with a 5-speed manual. Do you understand that?
I knew that the trans would bolt up to the engine, I was just curious as to whether the transfer case
would bolt up straight off my T-18 or whether I would need a different trans to transfer case adapter. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to find a 4x4 with the ZF and crawl under it with a tape measure.
