I bought the 3/4 length chassis exit headers from L&L because I wanted the exhaust to run all the way out the rear of the truck with nice tail pipes. They were also the only style JBG had in stock or could get at the time. Fender well headers usually are in the way of your tires and the tires will rub on the headers when turning extreamly sharp (the bigger the tire the worse the rub). If you are looking to run the exhaust out each side of the truck then the fender well headers may work best for you as they put the exhaust on the outside of the frame. Last I heard L&L were having trouble's keeping up with demand, they would take your order and money and not get you the headers or any info for months. Many people called and canceled thier orders so I was told. Maybe better now I don't know, I do know that I am very happy with the set I have. (nice stuff). -Ed
I have the fenderwell on my 79 429 F-250 with 36" Cepek fun country radials and they don't rub a bit, these tires are also 16.5" wide. The size of the lift will make a difference on wether they rub or not. I prefer fenderwell for the mere fact it is easier to route the exhaust and you don't have the heat build up around the starter. L+L is top notch, I would'nt hesitate to buy another set.... Oh wait they are lifetime warranty as well!
I don't have a lift on my truck and it has dual tanks. If i get fenderwell exit will I have rubbing because of the no lift. On the other hand, if I get the chasis exit will they have trouble runing the pipe because of the AUX tank?
I have 40" Gumbo's on the front of mine with the fenderwell exits, And they do rub but not too bad. Backspacing on the wheels plays a part, But I would be willing to bet the 33's won't rub.
Running the pipes all the way back might show in the wheel wells but there should be plenty of room, I have 6 1/2 " of space between my F150 frame and the rear 39.5x18 Boggers.
I have a 79 F250 L&L fender exit headers, 4" skyjacker easy ride front springs, 35" BFG AT's and no rubbing. I think the fender exit headers allow for more "header" room. Possibly larger diameter header tubing. Also things aren't so jammed between the engine and frame, same for the starter.
I like em.
My 2 cents
I have the L&L chassis exit shorties on my 77 F250 Highboy 460 which I like very well. I just didn't want to have to exit my pipes in front of the rear tires. A good muffler shop can route, even a 3" system nicely inside the chassis if they're good at it. I also used a starter wrap insallation blanket to ward off the heat, plus 2 guage battery cables. It works real well with the round Dynomax stainless Ultra Flow's.
When you call L&L, ask them if they have them in stock, if not, ask them to find a dealer "one of there retailers" which has a set in stock. They did it for me and I had mine in about a week. You won't go wrong with L&L chassis exit or fenderwell exit. The choice is yours. L&L told me that they wait till they have about 50 sets built to take to the coating shop. I guess they get a better price, that way and that is why there on backorder a lot. IMO there worth the wait.
