hello, i recently had both cats replaced on my 87 f150 (302). yesterday i was driving all day, and towards the end of the day, all of a sudden the exhaust became twice as loud as usual. turns out that they are getting way too hot, and they cracked near the o2 sensor. what can cause this and what can i do to fix this?
Nissanjon,
You should have a look at what causes an engine to run lean ...Its EEC IV I assume , Computer Controlled ? Check and verify all the sensors are doing their jobs , check the timing , and proper coolant level and flow . What kind of outside temps were you driving in today ? Also the egr plays a role in keeping combustion temps down. Just take it one step at a time until you isolate the problem .

the temperatures were rather cool....~50-60 degrees. the temp guage never shows much over cool....and since i recently lost a freeze plug (i have no idea where it went--it just disappeared), i know that the coolant level is fine. i think i'll have the egr system checked out next. could just be a vaccuum leak there, but we'll see....unfortunately, i may just have to park it for a while. maybe this weekend i'll test all the sensors and stuff.
does anyone ever use those error code scanners? are they a good investment? how much do they cost? where can i get one (meaning i'd rather get one at a local shop, than order through a catalog...)?
