97 4.0 running rough so I pulled the plugs to see if I could determine anything from their look/smell. I pulled one out and it did not have the ceramic insulator, totally gone! It must have shattered, been burnt up, and pushed out the exhaust. Where is it now? In the cat? No noise from the engine, oil was changed since then and I didn't notice any "extra" crap in the oil. Think a leaking head gasket could cause the plug to explode? I get steam in the exhaust at startup and sometimes even after it's warmed up. Replaced the intake gaskets already and it still runs rough. Any thoughts? Thanks, Vic

It could. Are you loosing coolant. Some steam is normal as a result of the catalytic converter reacting the remaining hydrocarbons to CO2 and H2O. It could also be a cracked head or block if you're leaking coolant into a cylinder. Ceramic may have turned to dust and went out the exhaust.
As stated in a previous post, run a compression check. If the check is OK, did you change all the plugs?
Thanks guys, I did change all the plugs and wires. It still runs rough. I can't find any vac leaks. Coolant does disappear and my guess is that's the steam. Head gasket or other issue with the heads seems likely. Anybody have a ballpark for the cost if I take it to a shop?
